SA strut inserts
Exactly what is the difference between the SA and FB front strut inserts? Is it the shaft diameter, tube diameter, or at the top mount?
I have a freind with a 79, and one strut is binding up. We are having difficulties finding cartridges for the 79-80 model. Can the 81-85 inserts be used by modifying something without much problem?

If you're not looking for a high performance strut, you can get the KYB GR-2's. They sell them for the SA's, and are pretty close to a stock strut.
The only difference I heard was the actual height of the tube. Apparently, you can use shims to correct this, but I've never done it.

Well, I have the GR-2's on my car (came with them) and they aren't too bad. But, the problem is, no one local has anything for the SA, and we need to car to be on the road this weekend. Hell, locally, it seems they claim they can't even get the SA inserts.
If push comes to shove, I spose we can rob the struts from the 85 that just needs a rear axle bearing and tag, but we really don't wanna have to do that.

Switch to the FB strut tubes, solves the problem now and forever. If you need replacements for the 85, I may have a pair laying around.
Just remembered I do. If you want, I can sandblast and paint or powdercoat them for you. 50 painted in epoxy, 75 coated in satin black, shipping included. Could have then shipped by Sat, if you let me know quick so I can get started on them tonight.

I'll get back with you on those. Since it's not my car, I have no control of what he does. I can lead him to water, but making him drink is another story.........

In my case I couldn't find any suitable FB tubes nearby, so I had my SA tubes shortened by ~1 inch above the spring perch, meaning more travel for me. I don't remember the exact measurement but I think it was in the neighbourhood of 22mm or so. The diameter of the strut inserts is slightly different but not enough to matter as the top nut from the SA strut tube grabs and holds the FB insert in place with no problems. Shortening the strut tube after the perch actually cured some bottoming problems I was having previously during solo events since our event surface is really hilly in places.
