SA emissions removal diagram

Hey everybody

I'm preparing to remove the rats nest from my SA so I decided to whip up a little diagram to plot things out.

Does it look correct? I followed mosesx605's tutorial from the archives and some other bits I found along the way. I have a couple questions though-- All of the little vacuume nipples on the carb and intake manifold are just blocked off right? And what becomes of the vacuume line coming from the trottle bumper? Does that get hooked into a vacuume source, or is that neglected? Finally, I want to do this tonight, but I don't have a PCV valve- would it be okay if I rigged it up and added it in later?

Thanks everybody

I'd wait until you got the PCV valve but I don't think you'll hurt anything being without one for a day or two. Yes, all the un-used nipples should be capped. By throttle bumper, do you mean the A/C solenoid? My car didn't have A/C so I didn't have to deal with that. If your A/C is still working I'd retain the solenoid and hook it up to a vacuum source.

Good luck.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation, pulls the exhaust gases out of the crankcase that bypass the sideseals, or piston rings. They are a oneway valve so if the carb backfires, the flame front/pressure wave cannot travel into the crankcase.

I hooked mine up on my 79 using Mosesx60's diagram, and it didn't want to start. It had a massive vaccuum leak, and was only when I turned the PVC valve orientation around that it worked. My car didn't have A/C,so I didn't have to worry about that.If you do the work, and it doesn't start turn the PVC valve around, and that should fix it.

If you turn the pcv valve around, won't it not work?

how is your car running now?

My car runs so perfectly now, I don't know if I want to mess anything up. I guess the only advantage for me would be to clean up the engine bay.

I am not sure if I just drew the diagram wrong,or if the PVC valve I got was different than the one Moses recommended.I used a 1990 V6 Dodge caravan PCV valve.Let me look at how I have it situated.I think it is opposite of how Moses had it listed.

My car runs fine, but then again when I got the car it had been sitting for 5+ years, and it wasn't running when I got it.To be honest with you I am regreting taking all the stock stuff out of my car.It does look clean, but it was/is in such great original shape that I wish I had left it alone.I may go back to normal in the near future.

I just checked it,and I do ave the threaded end plumbed into the housing, and the smooth end plumbed into the manifold. This is the opposite of how Moses had it drawn up,but like I said it would not run the other way because what I think was a major vaccuum leak.

Errr.

That's weird. I cribbed the PCV info from peejay and it's worked fine for me...

PCV valves are simple. They have a ball in them, if you shake it and can hear it rattle, the valve is good. To test for orientation, blow in one end, if air passes through it, that is the crankcase side, if not turn it around and blow again. Air passes from the crankcase to the carb only, not the other way around.

1-2-3 are spot on. Really, you could leave the fuel vent dangle, but either way you have the carb vent situation handled properly.

The PCV valve that I use has the threaded end going to the intake manifold, and thus is designed to have manifold vacuum on the threaded end.

Only thing missing is to connect the nipple on the center side housing to the filtered section of the air cleaner. There's a nipple on the underside of the SA aircleaner that is a perfect fit.

I just came in here to remind people, do *not* remove solenoid rack/ACV on a SA that still has the thermal reactor. Headers or '81-up manifold only.

I’m glad this thread surfaced, it’s a little simpler then what I did. I might change mine around this summer.
