s4 engine into my '82?

ok, so i have the motor, it has known bad coolant seals, everything else is pretty much unknown, but apex seals look good thru the exhaust port.

what all is involved in the swap? what all can i use off the 12a? can i use the stock s4 ecu? and how do i make my gauges work with all of it?

i know i have to swap the 12a front cover and source a gsl-se oil pan. i already have an oil cooler. i already have an electric fan. i gotta get this thing in before the end of march lol. i made a bet, and, long story short, if its in and running before the end of march, the engine will cost me nothing.

There a many many threads on the forum that can answer the question of what is required to put an S4/S5 in an FB. Search and you will find them.

On a side not, since the coolant seals are gone, it will require a rebuild. Depending on what is usable inside the engine, you're still looking at the cost of a seal kit at the very least. Good luck with the time frame.

yeah i know it has to be rebuilt. im tearing the engine down tomorrow. basically, i need to know what all i need to get from the harness and how to get my gauges to work. ive read into a couple threads, but i guess ill have to dig further. i want to get rid of all emissions stuff, all i want on the motor is water pump and alternator. im not going so much for any kind of high power at this point so much as just getting the motor rebuilt, in the car, and running.

Before you toss all the emissions stuff, remember that the S4 fuel injection system requires a lot of that in order to run. Sounds like you will be going carb and using your distributor? If that is the case, it should be a fairly simple swap. If you are going fuel injected, you've got your work cut out for you. Wiring and getting the fuel tank and pump right will be the biggest challenges. Good luck.

Im in the same boat right now. My suggestion is if this is your only car do not attempt it. Ive had mine apart for three weeks while i removed the 12A and rebuilt my GSLSE 13B and gathered parts needed for the swap. I lack a handful of parts and i need to brainstorm on how I will run a few things to the ECU but it will run soon. I also need to sort out the exhaust. It will need to be for 13B, have an o2 bung, and a split air tube. So it will have to be custom any way you look at it. Find a good welding shop...

its not my only car. the 12a has been out since may, is there no way to tune to get rid of the emission stuff? i mean, i havent gotten rid of anything yet, but most of the hoses and such are old and have dry rot and are broken or breaking. seems like itd be easier just to not put it back than to try and plumb everything lol

You can delete everything. Your vacuum advance if your not using the CAS and PCV wont work right though. You only need vacuum to the oil injector spider and fuel rail. Everything else is for emissions.
