The auto driveshaft is quite a bit shorter. No manual driveshaft would work. I have a good one in my garage, but he would probably be better off taking his to a driveshaft shop and having the U-joints replaced...

For any consolation, if it was a '83-earlier automatic car a manual shaft would work.
The difference is the '84-up had 4 speed autos, which were longer because the 4 speed is just a 3 speed with an overdrive unit sandwiched between the bellhousing and the rest of the trans. Added length means shorter driveshaft.
