Okay, I drove her to work this morning and she left a pretty good smoke trail (fuel, not oil). It felt pretty strong low to mid range, but broke up around 6k. Still pulled, but not very strong. Idle speed didn't seem to be affected by the increased pressure, still idles around 900. But maybe you meant mixture, rather than idle speed. I'll take a look at it when I get out. For high rpm though, she ran better at the lower pressure so I might try backing it down a bit and see how she feels. Lovintha7 mentioned that it had been set up for a streetport, and my engine is stock, so maybe that's the problem?

Nice vid, looks like fun and affordable too. I've always been a straight liner but honestly, drag racing is expensive and its very easy to end up back on the trailer headed home early. I may have to give this a shot.

Most of the courses I've run are about twice the length as that one, with a much better variety of turns, slaloms, etc. But for the price of the entry fee (20 bucks) it was still a really fun time. I haven't regretted going to a race yet.

The best part about autocross, you serve two roles while there. Part of the time, you are a spectator/worker, and part of the time you are a driver/participant.
You not only get to see the action, but also get to be the action.
It's also one of the least expensive ways to legally/safely drive to the limit. No other cars around to have to watch out for, and no worries about the disco lights flashing in your mirror.

My son and I just went to our first track event the weekend before last. We took the vert because the FB is not running (ignitors bad). Gainesville has a small road course/proving track at their raceway complex. It was a bit longer but it was great fun. 1st time on a road course. Cool thing about this one is that you can run as hard as you want as long as you dont hit the grass. 3 times in the grass and you are out. My top speed was about 65mph on the back strait and then you have to slam the car on its nose because you have a sharp short right hook at the end of the strait.

The vert handled the braking very well for stock brakes. It pushes hard under acceleration out of a corner though. Stock camber just don't cut it. But it is the DD so it was great fun.

Cool thing is, the track is big enought that you just go around and get back in line. I could have run probly 100 times if I wanted to. Best $30 I've ever spent.

I'm curious how the FB will handle it. Completely stock engine, tires and suspension, and no power steering.

YOu guys have got to go and do it!! Nothing like being able to go flat out!!

Some pics:

And the couse

It is too bad there were not any FB's there at all.

Kentetsu, you make driving that FB look like a cake walk. Do you have Power Steereing? I guess I am just used to driving the vert now, the FB seems like it would be more difficult on a short course.

Your engine sounds very responsive. Great Driving!! Hope to see more.

Later,
Bill

Thanks Bill! Man, if I lived near a track like that I'd never sleep (or go to work)! That's awesome. I don't have pwr steering, just used to driving the car. Its still my daily driver up to the point when the snow starts falling, so I get a lot of practice. lol

Since Sterling and I were discussing my fuel pressure settings earler, and I want to keep the info all in one place, I'll add this: It is now set at 3.8 psi and I have reset the idle mixture/speed accordingly. She is no longer smoking, and feels much stronger throughout the entire power band but most noteably at high rpms. She also lost the tendency to die when coming off idle unless very careful, so driveability has also been greatly improved. I won't mention fuel economy though, lol, but that's what you get if you want the power. I'm actually looking forward to going to work tonight, just for the drive. I really can't believe that I had all that extra power tied up in fuel pressures all this time. What a difference!

Thanks for the assistance Sterling.

My 12A in the FB is stock, except for an unknown brand header and aftermarket unknown name cat. Oh and the air pump is disconnected and there is an air control blockoff plate on the intake.... She ran great until the voltage regulator died, causing voltage spikes to kill the ignitors. But I will tell you this, when the 4 bbs kicked in, it sure felt like it was pulling harder than the stock 13B in the vert.
I am the 3rd owner of this car, the previous owner, a good freind of mine, knows nothing about engines, except to check the fluid levels(He is an excellent chef though, cars just weren't his thing, just a mode of transportation). Point being that he did nothing performance wise to the car. The first owner, I don't know, and I don't know what all he did to the car. The exhaust system after the header looks like a cheap muffler store setup.

I do know that I cannot get the thing to idle below 1200 rpms (when it was running-drove it for about 2 years this way). I searched for vacuum leaks, tweaked the Nikki as much as I could with what info I had on Nikki carbs. Just wouldn't idle. Ran great though!!!

I find it interesting that regulating fuel pressure makes that much difference!!

Keep up the good work!!

Later,
Bill
PS: That track is at Gainesville International Raceway in Florida, about 1 hour from my house. Cool thing is, they do this every month as long as there is no big event planned for the weekend. Also, the Raceway provides all the people, cones, etc(Test and tun only, don't know about actual race events.).

Bill- Chances are you are still dealing with a vacuum leak somewhere, although I do remember that the is a component on the carb (anti backfire valve maybe?) that, if not adjusted properly, can keep the throttle from returning to idle. If you start a thread on this issue, I'm sure that the experts can get you sorted out in no time. I just brought my car into work again, and am still impressed by the increase in power and overall driveability. I hope I can make at least one more race this year, but it is a ways away from me (other side of state). The wife might kill me if I go, but I might just do it anyway (afterall, she'll have all winter to get over it).

Thanks for the advice, and also, sorry about hijacking your thread. I start thinking about things posted in threads and start typing as I think and pretty soon I have a book.

You say that the engine is still bone stock? I think you also said you had a different intake. Did you notice a big difference when you installed that along with the carb?

Later,
Bill

Bill- Don't worry about the "highjack", no problem there. Yes, engine is bone stock and so is the intake. Exhaust, Sterling carb, and ignition were the most impressive gains in hp.
