RX7 Autocross Video
This one is from the season ender here in Michigan. In-car video, not too bad for a rigged up setup. Learned something new, which is always good (downshifting into 1st for the hairpins).
Beat out a few nice cars, including:
Honda S2000
07 Mustang vert
83 280 zx
86 rx7 fully race prepped (gutted, roll cage, big street port)
and just missed a 99 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 by 4/10ths
It was an extremely short course, perfect for those of us with short attention spans. Anyway, check out the vid and let me know what you think. Still getting the hang of Windows Movie Maker, but its pretty easy to use overall.

Nice job! Big savings when you play the tranny correctly. Great illustration of that.
Remind me what your jetting is.
No sharp turn problems, right?
What flywheel do you have?

No issues with sharp turns since I reduced the fuel pressure. I have one of Billy's fuel pressure gauges, but haven't installed it yet so I don't know for sure what pressure I'm running.
Flywheel is stock, as is the engine.

Best 400 bucks you'll spend next is for a Racing Beat aluminum flywheel.
I love mine. You'll have to be careful accelerating out of the hairpins.

At the top of the list, and I'm not sure which order they should be in, are:
Racing wheels/race rubber
Camber plates
Tri-link/panhard bar rear end setup
The wheels/rubber will have obvious benefits, but the camber plates are really needed too. I have a really tough time with the front end plowing on me, unless I really slow down for the turns (which I seem to be incapable of doing). Getting some more "dig" from the front end would be awesome.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that if I get those two (or is it three?) items taken care of, then I'll start being competetive in CSP. That is my true goal, mostly because a lot of people have told me that a 1st gen will never be competetive in autocrossing. I love it when people tell me I can't do something!
One of the purposes of putting these videos together is that now I have something to show people when trying to obtain sponsorship. I have a couple of local tire shops in mind for next year, and that would be great if I could even get someone to buy me some tires. lol.
Other plans for this winter include:
Swap in a LSD unit (thanks Perfect Circle)
Rebuild and port my spare 12a
Swap in spare (low mileage) 5 speed tranny
Brand new brakes at all 4 corners
All it takes is time and money. lol. The two things I'm most short on! There still might be another race or two before the snow flies, but I'm not sure yet. If there is, then I'll try to get some outside video as suggested to combine with the in-car video. Thanks for all the support guys. This sure is a hell of a lot of fun to be having legally!

One of the hardest concept to grasp, is slowing down to go faster. Plowing into the corners *usually* indicates braking a tad too late, meaning you are still trying to brake while turning in. The real problem is, it delays how quickly you can start to accelerate again.
I fully understand this *in principle*, now if I could just learn it *in practice*..........
Nothing beats seat time, for shaving time off, on the autox course.

Terrified.
You are an extremely good driver. Watching this makes me wish I could afford suspension that much more to be able to autocross without worries of my stock suspension going out on me. And congratulations on beating all those other cars. As far as the second gen goes, what good is the car if they driver can't drive, right?

Thanks guys. Whatever you do, don't wait to start autocrossing. As long as your car will pass tech inspection (which doesn't take much) then start now! One month will turn into a year will turn into a decade. I wasted twenty years waiting for things to be "just right", and I'd still be waiting if I hadn't wandered by an autocross one day on accident and observed.
Like Nike says, "just do it".

Im getting an fb in a few weeks and Im going to take about a year to work on it and get it right then Im going to start autocrossing that instead of my current car because autox is starting to catch up to my daily driver after 20-30 or so.

Sterling- I had my fuel pressure set according to "feel", with no idea of what I was actually running at. Today I installed my new gauge from Respeed, and here are the results:
Cold @ idle = 2.4 psi
Warm @ idle = 1.8 psi This was after about 15 minutes of idling.
The pressure seems to remain steady when revving the engine. But the drop between cold/warm temps seems strange to me.
While doing all of this, I discovered a coolant leak I need to track down. After that I'll check pressures again. FYI.

Okay, I think the gauge just needed to "settle in" a bit (work the air out of the lines, whatever). Now it reads a steady 1.75 psi. Nice gauge! I'll have to double check what a Sterling is supposed to run at, then see if there is any difference....

Wow! Amazing it runs as well as it does. I checked again and its at 1.6 and steady. I'll kick it up before I go to work tonight and see what she says...

Onward thru the fog!
Ketetsu,
Great video! Hey what's that "noise"? The overrev buzzer maybe? Hehe. I'd be scared to push mine that hard since I just got it running so well. Oh, and why have a passenger? Is he required as a "spotter" or something? Or extra weight to balance out the turns?
Anyway, that looked like a lot of fun!

Passenger not required, but sometimes helps to plant the rear end accelerating out of corners. Noises are: over-rev buzzer, passenger seat squeeking because its leaned all the way back against the storage bin, and keys jangling.
Sterling- I set it to 4 psi and it smokes at idle. I'll try it out when I go to work tonight, but holy heck is she running rich now...
