If the starter keep spinning, it is likely that you have the wire hook up wrong, try switching the 2 cables that goes to the starter.

sounds like your starter is stuck or youve got some faulty connections. follow all the wires and whatnot and make sure there isnt a short somwhere, maybe take the starter off and have a loook at that to.

Use to have a starter on a 4runner that would stay engaged after the car had started and would grind like a m adman, got it rebuilt and fixed the problem

i'd splash some beer on it and hit it with a hammer a couple of times and that should straighten in out.

I'm betting on the ignition switch, when it gets cold, which it can do even in California, it sometimes doesn't fully reset to the "starter off" position after you engage the starter.

My silver 85 GSL has been doing this the last few days, when the temp has dropped below freezing, you need to manually turn the key back to the starter off position after the car starts.

what happens is the brass contact in the starter solenoid is not disengaging. its either hanging up from lack of lubrication or just wore out. tap on the solenoid with a small brass hammer. that will probably release it. never hit the main body of the starter with a hammer of any sort. it has a row of permanent magnets around the inside that can be damaged. if your inclined to do so you can go to the local starter alternator rebuild shop and purchase a new solenoid. rebuilding starters is not hard. just takes patience. good luck.

My S model would crank for 20 seconds after you'd let go of the key. I swapped in a different starter along with a bunch of other stuff. The starter acted normally after that. That's why I suggested it was the starter earlier in this thread. The switch was fine.

I was reading about this before and someone said something about contact spray on your key and work it into the ignition.
