rusted...

so im sure if most of you were to pull the carpet up, we would find our 20+ year old cars should have some rust.

well, parts of my floors and other areas are rusted through. i can not find replacement floor pans. so....why not just cut it and and weld some new floors in?

anyone have this experience???

what about on the unibody frame? can i cut out the rusted pieces on the frame and weld in new pieces? i want to cut out, and replace with new metal all the rusted through areas...

any tips would be great.

Ive got an 84 gsl-se and the floors were rusted through, i patched the floors with 20g steel but now that i have a rust free parts car ill just swap both sides of the floor. good luck bc fixing rust is never ending with these cars.

.82 mm, i googled it. that doesn't sound like much but it did the trick to pass safety. I'll get pics when i rip the floor outa the parts car.

Much of the body is made out of 20 or 22ga metal to begin with so its thick enough for many of the patchs you might need to make. I did a lot of patching on both my cars using 22ga I bought at lowes.... For wheel weels and other areas that require some more strength I used 16ga. It's been years on the one car and everything is holding up nicely so far.

Rust free (**** full) cars FTW!

We patched the floors (actually, made compeltely new floors) in my old Bug using I believe 20ga steel welded to the "frame" (heater channels and center tunnel). I'm a big dude and it held me fine.

you can beed roll the new sheet metal before putting it in to make it stronger. you can triple its resistance to flex just by putting a few channels in it. I saw it on trucks! on spike tv they even proved it by putting weight on the two panels to see how much either hold before bending.
