Running positive wire from battery to alt for better voltage
I want to run a wire directly from my battery to my alt and ground it I was told I’ll get better voltage where is the positive terminal on the stock 85 alt
What I actually did was run a pre-made two foot battery cable that has eyes on both ends from the drivers side factory spot for the ground to the long bolt on the alternator. I did not do anything with the positive side of the alternator and just left the factory wire.
The issue I had was that I buffed out the alternator and powder coated with clear. This caused grounding issues. Hence the need for the extra ground cable.
You will always need more than 12v or else You will have no charging... If You only had 12v coming out of the alt. & if Ur battery had 12.5v...... the battery would be charging Ur alternator..!! LOL... think of it like water... voltage flows downhill.
If you weren't getting 14V before the wire install, then the alternator is more than likely on its way out. The alternator should be charging, without help, at 14V.
I did the same thing going directly from battery to alt. After testing, found that I needed to replace several other ground wires and now pretty consistent 14.2 volts and no battery issues.
