Rough Idle, Dies when stopping.
Ive been real busy with football practice latley, and i dont have time to get my car in. The problem is that when i go to stop at a light, the engine dies 1/2 the time when i push in the cluth or shift into neutral. I have to give it gas or it dies as i come to a stop, and i almost get in recks trying to clutch, brake, and give gas at the same time. Also. it idles like ****. It jumps all over the place, 1100 to like 200 rpm. Ive tried adjusting it, and it idles FINE when the choke is out. No deviation at all. Any clues? Its REAL annoying having my car dye right in front of the chicks
Its a 1984 GSL with about 140,000 miles on it. The engine seems to be ok, my dad babied it :p. As far as the clutch, its fairly new, like 3 years old. Any ideas?

hey, im not sure of the fuel injected model like yours, but my carbed model was doing the exact same thing, and i took the fuel pump off, and just blew as hard as i could in the hose, blowing out a lot of ****, then ran some pressurized water through it, then air again, and it never stoped or idled roughly again.

Hey, I had kinda' the same problem, but the idiot that had it before me took it to a shop to get it detailed(i.e. new spark plugs, oil change), but they put the wrong spark plugs in it, you know how rotary engine plugs have 4 prongs, these only had 1 prong on them. That may not be your problem but when I put the right ones on it made it idle a whole lot better and rev a whole lot faster. You can also check and make sure the spark plug wires are in the right place, yeah they screwed that up also.
It should say it beside the spark plug holes, but on the '84 GSL it is:
Trailing 1: top left
Trailing 2: top right
Leading 1: bottom left
Leading 2: bottom right
You can also check the spark plug wires, now i'll tell you how to do it: you have to wait until nighttime, fill up something that will spray a mist of water, start and warm up your car, then spray the mist over the spark plug wires, if you see blue sparks flying around then your wires are worn out.
Sorry for such a long reply but those are some of the problems I had with mine, and I hope it helps you out.

Have you noticed any fuel leaking from the left side of carb. it could be a tear in the accelerator pump diaphram, sounds like fuel pressure problem maybe,,also you may wont to adj your dash pot out more,, have you replaced the gas filter lately....good luck.......,

Check the fuel filter. You only need a pair of pliers to change it. Real easy. It's under the left side, almost behind the wheel. Just jack up the car and remove the hoses. Be careful of dripping fuel. For a few dollars, what can ya loose?
If that doesn't do it, It may be that your mixture is a bit rich or lean. Try seeing if it passes your state's emissions inspection. If you don't have an emissions inspection, see if your local shop has an exhaust gas anaylizer. If not, there is a detailed proceedure to adjust the carburetor mixture and I'll get into that a little later.
Good luck.

The first problem (dying out) sounds like your idle speed is set too low. I don't know about the idle jumping around to the extent you described though.
As the other guys said, you should first make sure all the easy stuff is good, meaning fuel filter, spark plugs, dizzy cap and wires. Make sure your timing is adjusted properly. Obviously make sure the plug wires are going to the right places, as mentioned. Check all your vacuum lines and connections for leaks. You can adjust your idle speed and mixture via the 2 screws on your carb. It's time consuming to get the mixture perfect, but it's pretty easy to get it idling decently.
If you still can't get it, sounds like a good reason to junk the emmissions crap, vacuum advance, etc. At least this way you've eliminated a whole bunch of potential sources of problems. That's my answer to all these types of stuff haha.
Good luck dude.

Along with all other suggestions.........remove the vac hoses to the shutter valve, that might help your jumping idle prob. It sounds like you have other vac leaks....check all hoses. Do you still have emissions equipment on the car? Remove it if you don't have emissions test in your state.....Air pump & ACV valve, and get an ACV block off plate from Mazdatrix.
Did this problem just start one day or was it like this when your Dad had it?

Muhahaha I shall save the day!
Check 1 hose, mine died everytime it came to a stop, and couldn't hold an idle. The hose is located DIRECTLY above the exhaust manifold. It's basically shaped like a U. All of the hoses around your ACV (air control valve-expensive POS) should be checked, if any of them leak you can suffer POOR engine performance and stalling problems. Hope this helps you out, I almost junked mine then fixed that 1 hose for 38 bux from the dealer.
Peace

Thanks all for the inputs. I tried some of them, and made it slightly better, but im taking it in tomorrow to a place that works only on Rx7's. McNair Auto or somethin. Im sure they can fix it and find about $4000 more that needs fixing, LOL. It needs a good look up anyway. The Mazda dealers are idiots, they run and cry every time i pull in. Im sure they are 1/2 the reason it dont work right :p. As for the fuel filter, it DID help. As far as the hoses, they are like all origianal and probably all need to be relplaced. I guess ill find out tomorrow.....gulp..maybee i shouldnt take it in :p

I'd do what I could b4 I send it in to the shop. Why give some dude $50/hr to change vac hoses and do a basic tune up..... plugs, car, rotor, wires. Fixin' it yourself, or tryin' to fix it, is the best way to learn about your RX. Might save you some money too.
