welcome. any first gen will start you off gereat. unless you are willing to work, an SE would not be your first choice, or i reccomend sticking with the carb. both are simple beasts when you understand them.

I think being in Australia he'll be limited to a 12A carby anyways, as the GSL-SE's were US market. We certainly didn't get any in NZ.

Series 3's are the best, they have bigger brakes and better interiors. I guess in Perth you should be able to get a tidy example for around AUS$6000-9000, or a project for about half that. What are you planning to do with it?

i've only ever seen one s3 here in perth.. and it wasnt for sale.

but yeah.. im not sure what i want t do with it.. for a while (till i save up) its just gonna have to be as it came, and i eventually want a clean, fast car.

i've looked at afew and i can get a decent one for around $3700ish...

i found a realy nice s2 with a turbo-block (no turbo though) 13B, but didnt have the mo-nay at the time.

oh btw... whats an SE? (what years?)

thanks for your help

I think they're referring to the GSL-SE variant from 84-85. The US tends to call them by the product code (GS, GSL, GSL-SE etc) but us "colonies" call them either S1 (78-80) S2 (81-84) or S3 (84-85). The GSL-SE had a 13B fuel injected 6-port engine, but all our Aust/NZ S3 examples were 12A carby. We also imported the 12A Turbo models as well (mate used to own one) and the Jap-spec S2 12A 6-port versions.

The Australian assembled S2's used the "N" designated 12A tallport engine, which is widely regarded as the best 12A to port due to the massive inlet runners and factory port sizes. S2's look virtually identical to the S3's, but all Australian S3's had factory sunroofs and cooling vents in the front air dam for the brakes.

I have an '81 Australian assembled S2 RX7 currently under restoration with a S5 turbo swap. They're great cars, not overly complicated and you can have a lot of fun with them - I've owned 5 now! Good luck for your search

in perth theres an abundance of S1's. S2's are getting harder to find in good condition and S3's are a rare sight.

Im quite happy with my s1, although i am looking into a s2 disc brake rear end.

All 1st gens in AUS are 12a's unless someone has dropped a 13b in it. They still go hard even stock.

S1's are about$500-$4000, s2 $3500-6000 s3 $5000-8000

Of course... thats just a guide... most people have modded them now so the prices seem to go up n up

Good luck finding a RX and hopefully ill see u round the streets in no time

-James

P.S. Where abouts in good ol perth are you??

Im up in the Joondalup area

Hey im in perth as well , iv got a series 2, but dad and 2 of my mates have got S3s over here. Dads has gota be one of the best iv seen in a long time, and im not saying thats just cos ive helped build it. it looks sweet If you ever see BLUDNUT round the place give him a wave. Theres plenty of S3s round the place you just gotta look for them. By the way, If you ever see YORK7 round the place wave to me too. it looks pretty dodgy but it goes bloody well. Got into a drag with a s3 yesterday and beat him. Yay.
