rode in a gsl-se

well, i talked to/helped that guy with the gsl-se today, helped him hollow out a cat (the last one) and put it back together, and we went for a ride.. all i could say was "damn" even with my exhaust, my car still has nothing on his. i was hoping it would, but it doesnt. he said he liked my interior alot (in very good condition opposed to his) and he liked the way my exhaust sounded. he has a new clutch that grips hard as hell (made everything loose fly to the back of the car going to second) handles great. i really wish i would of found one. and the thing is, he just rolled over 106k, and he paid 1200. i bought mine with 136k and paid 1400. i like his car alot and he ended up being pretty cool. he chilled for about 2 hours. just thought i would share..

I remember when I got my first GSLSE. I had had a 12a(yes, I know, it's a good car too) and driving the SE was a real treat. The useable torque/power difference is very noticeable. Now if I could just get it to idle right!

I guess Im opposite from you guys. I started driving a GSL-SE and moved to the 12A. When I had my permit and I was learning to drive, I drove a 1994 Ford Tempo auto. Then, from there I moved up to a 1988 Dode Ram 4x4 5 speed. I perfected my clutch abilities off-road, as we have a private resort with trails and such for motorcycles(which I also ride ), ATV's, 4x4s etc out in the woods. Anyway, I got good ad driving a stick, so my Dad finally let me drive his 85 GSL-SE with my permit. That was sweet. I love that car, the way it pulls, the way it handles, the way it sounds crusing. Then, I got my license. I was returned to the 1994 Ford Tempo auto. I drove that for two weeks and the tranny dropped coming home one night (damn Fords). Needing a car to get to and from school and work, my Dad loaned me his 1985 GSL. This what I mean by moving backwards. "Cool"I thought. Well, it was cool driving a car that no one else had, and a car that looks as good as it drives, but there was something missing. Like the sweet hummm of a 13B FI engine, the power to pull hard all the way through the RPM range, and the ability to stick to the road like a fly sticks to fly paper. I re-learned to drive an RX-7 again, and adjusted to the way the 12A likes to be driven. Now, in the mean time of this whole preocess, I have been building up a third RX-7 at my Dads house, with the full intention to give myself a car as close to a GSL-SE as possible...It should be on the road shortly, and we'll see how well I did .

I have considered trying to find a 13b to upgrade my 12a in the 83 LE but just don't have the money to, and I don't believe there are any in the New Hampshire area.

Spent $4,000 plus travel expenses to go to see, then buy, Pamela 2,500 miles from where I live. People laughed.

Drove her home the same day I bought her, people laughed.

Poured thousands into aftermarket tweaks (rims, low profile tires, RB exhaust, etc.) People chuckled.

Took people for a spin. They want one. Badly. And while they don't laugh anymore, my SE makes 'em smile.

Edit: Maybe SE stands for "Smile Enhancer"?

I owned an '83 (12A) for the last 4 yrs and sold it this fall - recently found a GSL-SE, and like Mantis, had to travel across 3 provinces to pick it up. It was well worth the trip... I knew the SE was supposed to be the premium 1st gen but I had no idea what I was in for. It takes about 5 minutes behind the wheel to see and feel the differences between these 2 cars - taking nothing away from the 12A mind you, but the SE is incredible.

Man... you guys make me want to drive a SE and see what all this fuss is about. My 85 is a GS model. Drove it around w/a 12A for almost 2 years adding as many goodies as the pockets could afford. Swapped in the 13B again adding some goodies. Now I'm in the midsts of the TII swap. I never drove a SE though.

Yeah, it looks pretty damn good. It even has a notch for the Power Antenna? Does it have a Third Brake Light (LED Style)? Who makes it?

Inquiring minds want to know!

RIMS??????

Where did he get the rims at? I have a set of rims like that on a different vehicle and I need to replace a center cap that has been lost. They are ARE rims and the company doesn't seem to exist.

I would think ARE might be American Racing something or other...Those look like Amrican Racing wheels too. Try American Racing .

~T.J.

EDIT: I think ARE might even be part of the American Racing model number...

I had the deal of the millenium when I bought my GSL-SE this summer. Color isn't my favorite (or one of them!). It's the tan exterior with the brown interior. Bought the car from the original owner. '84 model with 101,000 miles. Garage kept, immaculate condition, everything still works including the a/c. Interior in almost perfect condition. Picked it up for $300!!! Car didn't run so they thought the engine was dead. Bad gas and 2 years of sitting clogged the injectors. A little cleaner and no problem. Clutch slave cylinder was rusted stuck so they thought the clutch was bad. Took it apart and cleaned it now it works great. They couldn't believe I had it running the next day. I love that car. Now its got a streetport and other goodies and I've probably only got $1500 or so total in the car. I love this car!!!

As a driver of an 84SE and an 80LS, the performance you gain by going with the 13b RE-EGI w/6 ports is offset by the amount of time you'll spend troubleshooting and maintaining the EFI system. Over the past 2 months, I've gone from changing injectors to rebuilding the throttle body to try and get the SE to idle correctly. The ECU gives it a mind of it's own.

When it's running right, there's nothing that can stop it, but once it starts 'acting-up', hold on tight. TPS can shake your fillings out...

I'd never sell it, though. Too much bang for the buck.

Had both a 12a and 13b...I really enjoyed both but have to give the nod to the "se". BOth cars were stock. Both are nice and would own either of them..
