Road trip?
This is a general question about what you would do in my place. I got my 85 12a a couple of weeks ago. I replaced the O rings in the oil cooler and replaced the intake gasket (good advice from the forum, thanks). I also replaced the cap, rotor, and wires. The plugs we alread new. I also replaced all fluids, bled the brakes and clutch, and replaced the front shocks, ball joints, and tie rod ends. The car runs fine, starts right up, no visible smoke, except black sometimes (although the exhaust smells strong), and it has 130,000 miles on it.
The question is this, would any of you be comfortable driving this thing from Boise to Vegas and back? That is about 1200 miles total. The weather should be in the 60s and 70s the entire time.

I don't forsee any difficulties. You've handled the suspension side of things, which in my opinion is the most likely problem for a trip. 130,000 miles on a 12A is not outlandish, so you should be good on that point. The only thing left to check are the tires. Make sure the tread is good and not separating, and then bogey on down to Vegas.

I paid $500 for my 82 GSL with 150k miles on it. Did a good tune-up on and then drove 2000+ miles to IL where I now live. (WA to IL) My car drives just fine still and starts up just like it did in WA. (No problems)
I say you'll have no problems as long as you don't drive like a moron and think you hav a Porsche 911 or something like that. heh

Kinda interesting man. This last sunday I drove my 1982 GSL from Idaho Falls to Boise and back just for fun. Had no problems whatsoever. Has 125,000 miles on it. It was alot warmer there than here and the blizzard in American Falls wasn't fun. But all in all was a great ride. Have fun in Vegas!! :1party:

Hell, it might as well be a Porsche. I just got a quote back from my insurance agent: $195 per six months for liability only. That's more than I pay total for my 92 Explorer, my 2002 Sienna, and my old beater boat.
By the way, ndmrpwr, I grew up in IF. I worked at bicycle shops and ski shops there all my lousy life. Ring a bell?

On the day I bought my '85, I drove it three days and three provinces (the smallest of which is about the size of Texas) home (through the Rockies in winter!). I got into a front end collision on day 1, and still made it with no other problems.

I drive a 1500 mile round trip at least once a month. The engine prefers a nice long cruise rather than a series of short trips around town. Not that anything goes wrong but just carry the usual spares- fuses, fan belt, spare small cans of water, oil and fuel. Check your spare tire and make sure you can get the wheel studs off!

Thanks, all, for the confidence. Obviously, no one can predict the future, but I think I will go and be prepared for anything. I even have a tow bar I can install just in case.
I am liking this car. It's the first car I have owned that will lay a patch (albeit a one-line patch). Limited slip is my next investment... Oh, and rear disk brakes. I have owned damn near 20 cars now, and none of them have had rear disk brakes. I just want to know what it's like to have them.
