Removing the steering wheel

I just started working on my new 83 GS, and I already need some help. I need to pull the steering wheel so I can get at the dash to figure out what's wrong with my tach. Anyway, when I get to the steering wheel, I don't have a socket big enough for the nut.

Before I start buying random sockets, does anyone know what size I need? Also am I going to need a steering wheel puller? The Chiltons manuel was a little unclear on this. Thanks for any help.

The nut that holds on the steering wheel is the same size as the lug nuts/bolts.. remember that.

Sometimes when the tach dies,it's one of the igniters,
leading / trailing.. i'm not sure which one.

They are on the distributer , with plugs that go to them.

If your tach is not working I would check your igniters first. put a timing light on to see if you are getting spark to the trailing coil.

The steering wheel nut is the same size as your lug nuts, so use the lug nut wrench.

A cheap puller maybe necessary to remove the steering wheel off the tapered shaft. What ever you do, do not bang on the wheel or you will sheer off the plastic pins located on the steering shaft.

Also, to pull out the gauge cluster I found that I could just drop the steering column a bit (there's 2 bolts under the dash... easy to get to) and not take off the wheel....

I always use a spark plug socket, and I've only encountered one wheel out of about a dozen that I've pulled that wouldn't come off by just wiggling it back and forth.

Thanks for everyone's help. I unscrewed the nut using the lug nut wrench. Was able to get the wheel off without a puller.

Now I'm trying to get the insturment panel off. I got the two screws that hold the trim part and the two screws at the top of the insturment panel. But I think I'm still missing another set of screws for the panel, but can't find them. Anyone know where they are? Thanks.
