Have you actually had a look at it? Because it's really not that hard. There's a bolt at the top and a circlip that holds the pin in at the bottom.

Other way around... hehehe

Bolt at bottom, clip at top.

Oh well, He'll understand what you're saying...

Are you sure about that? I could of sworn it was the other way around. Guess it depends if you're looking at it with the hatch closed or with the hatch open.

That could be it.... I was thinking hatch open; clip and pin at top where glass is, bolt at bottom.

I've read that changing only the drivers side has fixed some hatches.

Yeah ,i've heard that too,,get a stick to prop up the glass, then
remove the 2 clips to where they attach to the glass, with the
other ends still attached to the body, push down and see what
happens,,the easiest to colapse is the bad one,,,,or two

It worked for mine.

I have a spare one for sale now if anyone wants one. I can't remember what I paid for it, but I know it was more that I thought it should be. First $20 + shipping takes it home. PM or e-mail me...

i realize it's probably easier than taking out the oil pan plug, but i'm hesitant to force anything for fear of something breaking.

so...would anyone mind posting a little more detailed instructions?

If your concerned about breaking something maybe you best plan would be to leave it alone.

1.open hatch
2.Prop hatch open, with a stick (or it will fall on your head)
3.Remove the C clip and the strut pin holding the strut to the glass, (you don’t need to remove the fastener in the glass.)
4.Undo the connection to the body, if I recall correctly I used a 10mm open end wrench, and just unthreaded it from it’s mount.
(Installation is the reverse of removal.)

If you don't have a manual, there is a picture of the Rear hatch components assembly in the Victoria British LTD. Catalog.
