Being a Military Police helps to get into the Police Academy and Highway Patrol.

A college degree in Criminal Law helps too. I think doing detective work would be a healthier profession than a joe schmoe cop with a target on their chest.

My buddy with NO college degree became a cop in Monterey Park, CA: an extremely poor and gang infested area for it's size. His prior profession: working at his Dad's bar and being a Marine.

TJ... I am buying a 1980 GS as a parts car so I can steal te ENTIRE mint interior out of it. I've got 82 GSL seats, some miscellaneous 83 GSL interior pieces... I'll get rid of them to ya' for dirt cheap.

I don't know about your county/state, but to get on the county sherrifs force around you simply apply, pass the background check and easy physical exam, get sent to the state academy for a few weeks, qualify with a weapon and viola! You are deputized...Not tough at all. Most deputies spend a few years at county level then move on to State.

Also- let me know if you need a good carb..I have a Nikki that ran flawlessly (stock) on my 85 GSL. I just put a weber 45 on mine...Maybe Sterling or Carl would cut you a deal on a rebuild??

Yeah, me too, but look how beautiful it is now . I have faith that I can build mine better that it was before it was stolen. I have all kinds of ideas as to what I want to do to her now that shes back.

Hey RMD,
I just read the whole story and I have to say congratulations! You've got a serious pair and some solid detective skills there, man. If you want to be a cop, go for it. Just figure out what kinda cop you want to be, find a precinct that you want to look for and apply. Be sure to mention why you want to do it. You might even mention the recovery, since you did all the legwork and didn't confront them directly like an idiot. Most cops will respect that. Also, the department that hires you will take care of any background checks and training, so you don't need to worry about that.
As for the bastards that stole and stripped your RX7, I say nail them any way you can. Press a lawsuit for damages, post their pics everywhere and make sure they're well-known (esp in motorhead circles) in the area as career car thieves. That way they'll be shut down even if the law can't/won't do it.

Definitely go the police route if you're wondering what to do for a living...Here in Arlington, you need some kind of college degree (doesn't have to be Criminal Law...) and a clean background and you're in after a couple of interviews. I was going to go that route when my buddy finally gave me the call and I took the tests to get into SBC...

Yeah, its weird how just having the car back makes me feel so much better. Ive been driving my Dads 85 GSL for a while now since my car was stolen, and its a piece on the inside. Broken consoles, lights burnt out, dusty as all hell, ripped seats, no rear interior, etc. I hated the thing because it made me miss my car so much because of how nice I had brought it to be. Well, after I got my car back, I got back into the RX-7 groove of things, and I wanted to work on the cars again. It was weird really, but so far, Ive taken and replaced the stereo surround, shifter surround, cleaned stuff, fixed light bulbs, etc. Basically did a short little detailing job to make the car seem more presentable. Boy the small things make the big difference, thats for sure. The car still has no radio or anything, but I have plans to make a custom fiberglass panel to cover the gaping hole that I can later cut to hold gauges, switches, whatever down the line. Its just cool to be enthused about the cars again .

Great work! I give you credit. Any idea on the parts value of the damage? Seems like a lot...

I wouldn't get high hopes on recovery of funds. Scumbags like these never have two nickels lying around. They'll have to steal another car to come up with the cash!

Heh, no big deal man. It didnt bother me at all. I dont expect people to just give me everything I need for free, lol. Hell, I think if I did, that would make me more of a jerk than someone trying to sell me parts . Seriously though, dont worry about it man, it was no biggy.

As for the rebuild, Im hoping for good luck, thats for sure. Unfortunatly, its going to be a REALLY slow process. I have no idea when the legal system is ever going to put the gears into motion, so Im going to be sending off letters and emails to all my local news stations as well as the state attourneys office regarding how poorly this situation was handled.

I had basically planned on trying to use any kind of restitution money I may eventually get to fix my car, but at this point, Id be lucky if they cops even arrest anyone.

And I agree with the "lack of probable cause" indicating something awry. Could be a lazy cop, could be a dirty cop, but he's certainly full of **** either way. stolen vehicle on their property (if he'd bothered dusting with their prints likely)... that's enough probable cause to get the characters arrested and held in most states. Go over their heads and bring down the state-level hurtin on them. When you're through, sue that PD in a civil suit to make them pay
