rebuilding my 12a

one of my friends and I were trying to get the flywheel off we had enough trouble with the nut holding the flywheel on. Once that was off we figured the rest would be no problem but my flywheel seems to be content right where it is we tryed heating it up and wd-40 nothing works.

PB BLASTER!!!! dont heat it... let it soak with some PB on it for like 12 hours, then take a BFH(Big Fucken Hammer) and a towel. then just smack it with the towel over top of the flywheel, working around the flywheel..... if that dont work, i think someone has a flywheel for sale on here....

Just use a pry bar or large screwdriver to pry between the flywheel and the endplate then hit the flywheel with a hammer. It will come off with 1 or 2 hits depending on how hard you hit it. You can soak it but it is not needed.

Tell you a trick with that.

They are actually built for pullers, but the puller is not something most people have laying around...

Find bolts that will thread into the puller holes. Put them in enough to get a good bite on the threads with a boxed in wrench attached to each side. Slide a socket underneath the wrench on top of the pilot bearing area and then proceed to tighten down the bolts in the puller holes enough to get some pressure on it. Make sure to use a junk wrench as it may bend.

With that - a single good wack should pop it off...

I've done this a few times with stubborn flywheels when I don't have the time to wait for PB blaster (or it plain didnt work!)...

I've uploaded some pics to better explain...

we tried with the prybar and hammer that didn't work. Ill c if I cant make the poping it off with the socket and wrench idea work. Good thing most of my tools are mastercraft I can just return it if it bends.

Make sure you thread the flywheel nut on a little bit, Nothing like 30lbs on your foot to wake you up.

^^I agree with that and I'll keep that in mind. Would anyone be willing to give me their opinion on who makes a good flywheel for the 12a

Racingbeat and fidanza make good light weight flywheels for our cars, and yes, use the puller

^^I love your car I want mine to look like that. I will have to go to canadien tire and find some better penatrent and then attempt the puller technique.

use a hammer to strike a piece of plywood laid across the surface of the flywheel (use the nut to block it from flying off). just be sure to replace the thrust bearings before you put the engine back together.

since this is the case just pry harder and smack that flywheel with a 5 pound hammer/mini sludge. If it doesn't come off hit it harder.

Edit: sorry wrong quote. he isn't keeping the flywheel.

This will be my first rebuild. If the puller trick doesn't work I guess I'll use the "you just need a bigger hammer" idea

The only thing that scares me about using a bigger hammer is the increased likely hood of me hitting the block and damageing it.

Just use some piping, crow bar, etc and place it on the back of the flywheel and beat the end of said pipe/crow bar.

yo.. i just got my computer up and running this is my first post in a WHILE!

use a dead blow hammer or something made of solid brass. you do not want to damage the flywheel surface unless you plan on resurfacing. or use a puller
