Really BAD Electrical problem

ok... this has been a NIGHTMARE. I have a 85 GSL ok. the problem is that when it starts it stays running... i can turn the key off and take the key out of the ignition and it stays running. the way i kill it is i choke it. all my fuses are good and fusible links. everything works sept my front wipers they dont work at all, but its starting to get annoying. PLZ HELPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

First off, welcome to the forum. It sounds like the ign switch might be the problem. Normally shutting the key off cuts power to the ign system. That shuts down the engine. Somehow the ign system is still getting power.

i would personally remove the ignition switch and inspect it for wear. if you are uncomfortable with such a procedeure, swap your old one out for a used one and use the used one for a test dummy to see if your old was switch was the problem. you can retain the key cylinder, just swap out the switch.

Black wire with white stripe connected to the + terminal on each coil is from the ignition switch. Both these wires should have 0 volts with ignition switch off and 12 V when switch is on. Is this happening? If there is always 12V something in the ignition switch is probably broken.

Double check the (should be 15 Amp) second fuse up from the back on the right hand side of the fuse box. This supplies power to the front wipers.

This is the cleanest scan of the wiring diagram for your car.

Yea, I'd bet it's the ignition switch. I think I got mine at AutoZone for about $100.

Has this vehicle had a car alarm or remote start system installed?

And or has it been stolen before with a dent puller and screwdriver?

Have you upgraded, replaced, or removed the alternator lately? Were the wires to the T connection messed with? Just another thing to check. I know if the wire is reversed then it will keep the car running even if you turn off the ignition with the key.

the BW wire on the coil shows 0v when the key is off and 12v when it is on... so i wonder if when its running the alternator is supplying power to the coils bypassing the ignition switch since i was weedin gout emissions stuff?

Sounds like your ignition switch is OK. The black /white wires are connected to the + terminal, right? Are there any other wires connected to the positive terminal on the coils? Without 12 V to that terminal on the coils the car should not run.

Unplug the back of the alternator, and start the car, then let it run for a minute and turn it off. If it turns off start with the alternator.
