Real Horse Power of a JDM 12A turbo ?

Is a JDM 12A turbo's horse power rated at 160sae hp or a 160jis hp. I ask because if its 160jis hp that would be about the same as gsl-se's 13B's 130sae hp. So which is the better engine (besides the point that 12A-Ts are rare)? I have always thought that a JDM 12A turbo was the most powerful engine offered for the first generation Rx7s and I would like how much hp the 12A-Ts are really rated at.

Well a JDM 12A turbo, not 13B(as indicated in the info from the link), is fuel injected and not a "carby". You already know that, so what engines are they comparing in the link?

that link is a dyno of the gsl-se engine, notice please how its rated at 160jis and 20.5 kg-m. the blue graph is the 4 port carbed 13b, as in the rx4/5/repu.

i think the question is... What power are you looking for when it's all said and done? it's not "which is the better engine", it's which is better suited to your needs and driving style.

Many of the few sites that list the hp for the 12A-T indicate that its has 160 hp, but there not specific about if it's jis hp or sae hp. So it would be easy for one to mistake what horsepower a 12A-T really has. Thanks for providing the info you have and answering my question.

Exactly..... For know my Rx7 sits covered in need of starter, maybe a fuel filter, and more sooner that later a new engine. My decision for the next engine will be an educated one, thanks inpart to everyone's feedback. A 12A-T would be nice to have, but I not going to wait forever for one. It really comes down to whatever engine I find first, will keep this car rolling. It would be nice to have a replacement engine waiting when the old engine finally goes and it's anyone guess when that will happen.

Surprisingly, this car already draws a lot of attention, compliments and respect. Over the summer it went unchallenged, so my racing days are over and having a ton of extra power is not a priority, though I will have a 12A with more than 110 hp.

Enough said, I agree with FB II, You need to worry about what you want. I have a spare motor to play with this summer, but the engine that is in my car runs great. The priority I have is making sure it is dependable for now. When the time comes I will play with the other engine to see what kind of poneys I can sqeeze out of her.

the 12a-t is cool, but a turbo 2 engine is a better choice. its the same money as the 12a-t, and it was sold here, so parts are available.

first thing to decide is how much power you want, and how much you wanna spend doing it.

Only real difference between a 12A and a 12AT on the inside is the rotors. On the outside, an EFI setup.

My buddy runs 12A Turbo Rotors in his Supercharged First Gen. Pretty good performance.

I have three major projects planned for this Rx7:

1. New engine $3500 budget
2. Wide Body Kit $1400 budget for kit plus install and paint job at least $2000
3. Upgrade suspension and upgrade wheels (priority with wide body kit, $1600 3pc Simmons)

If I went with a TII engine would it be an easier engine swap if I used a TII transmission too? What other changes would have to be made and what sort of electrical work would be involved?

I'm curious as to what fuel pump you would use for the TII swap. Also, could you use the GSL-SE engine mounts? Obviously I would have to custom fab mounts for the TII tranny, and then there is the driveshaft as well, along with the ecu. I am becoming increasingly interested in the TII swap. I probably won't be doing it anytime soon at all, but it would be nice to know to keep in the back of my mind for when the time does come.
