Angry RB muffler: hangers?

I just installed my used RB exhaust. Everything fits fine except the muffler, which won't fit in two ways: the tailpipes themselves are pressing into the body, even the top of the indent meant to FIT the tailpipes; but meanwhile the actual hanger brackets (two on the end of the muffler, one on the pipe right above the rear wheel) are about two or three inches too low to reach my rubber hangers.

What the heck?!

Can anyone post a pic of their rb muffler, especially how it fits onto its hangers.
Thanks guys
Alex

What year car is this?

Is this the RB SP setup?

Two things come to mind. One, the reason the tips are hitting the rear tray is that the rest of the
exhaust is too low and its pivoting up from the mount point above the rear axle. So make sure
you have the exhaust snugged up ahead of the muffler to address this. Second, you need a
few inches of hanger to mount the exhaust. Stock there were 3 hangers used, 2 on the drivers
side and 1 on the passenger side. They are about 3 inches in length. I ended up using some
rubber straps I found at the parts store that have predrilled holes every inch and used those
to get it mounted then cut off the extra.

It's an 84 GSL. So far the system is hanging by the header and the two hooks off the midpipe. The hangers I bought were universal ones about 2" long, but even with 3" ones I don't expect it to reach. I'll attach the other two connections on the midsection and see how things look.

After getting all connectors on the midsection hung I turned again to the muffler. No difference. However, I finished up my hanging job with some sash chain that should hold it. By making my connections right I was able to leave it sitting much more centred, but the muffler really wants to sit too high and towards the drivers' side.

Did u buy a RB setup that was for your year. If u go to there websites they have 3-4 muffler versions for different years (due to diff mountint PTS im assuming).

The simple fix would be to cut three equal length pieces of steel or aluminum and drill holes at and appropriate distance. One hole would go through the bracket on the exhaust, the other hole through a bolt that goes through the lower hole of the exhaust hanger, should give you the length you need to have it sit level.

This is for sure the 83-85 RB muffler, I just checked the large photos on the RB website. Maybe the mounts got messed up on my car. Anyway, it's on and it's staying on.

If i'm not mistaken, you have to remove all of the heatshields except for the one above the rear muffler.

The only difference in exhaust systems is in the rear muffler, and there's NO way you can mix up a '79-80 (flange is very close to axle) with an '81-82 (dual pipes over the axle) with an '83-85 (flange is pretty far from axle). IIRC they all use the same hangers, with possible exception of '79-80 not having the donut-shaped mid hangers. I don't remember.

The "street port" system is based on the '81-82 form factor and that exhaust fits '79-80 (done one) and '83-85 just fine.

I never had to remove any of my heat shields. I seem to vaguely remember hammering a dent in the heat shield by the firewall to make room though.

I have removed the middle heat shield already. The other ones are not touching the exhaust.
