Question Rattling Engine Noise -- what could it be?

As my car idles, at either warm up or around 1000 RPMS, I'm hearing this rattling noise. It sounds like if you were to put a metal screw, nut and bolt into a tin can and shake it around, really hard.

I can't tell if its coming from the engine or underneath the car.. It only seems to occur when I hit 1-1.5 RPMS, but not passed 1.5 RPMS, and while the car is warming up. I can hear it as I REV the engine as well.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

Thanks all, I appreciate the advice.

M.

check your engine mounts and then makesure there is nothig inside the rotors (doubt it but makesure) get a friend or wedge a piece of wood against the accelerator and pop the hood, listen in the engine for anywhere were the noise could be coming from.

aside from doing that i really don't have a clue.

cheers'

it's either a loose heat shield on the converters, a loose brick inside the converter, or a loose exhaust port sleeve...

I second peejay with the loose heat shield theory. That's what rattles on mine. Time to go Racing Beat I guess. (<-My first use of an emoticon.)

Right on.

Racing beat it is

I've been looking for an excuse to add a racing beat streetport exhaust setup.

I'm swinging by my mechanic tomorrow morning. I'll run this info by him.

I'll update the thread as soon as its resolved.
Thanks for the information, once again.

Peace.

I get a rattling sound under 500 RPM--when car is cold or needs to be adjusted... I know it's from my exhaust system hittin a shield... but most of the time i'm over 700 RPM so it's no biggie--I'll bend the shields when i get the chance...

I had a tapping under the car at idle and I found it was one of the support brackets hitting the undercarage, it drove me nuts, I bent it out about 1.5 inches and no more noise.

I've had that problem!! The rattling is your cat! Pieces are all broken inside but not small enough to exit the cat so they bounce around making that annoying sound. Get a new cat or get to that one and make sure you get everything out.

P.S. someone else could have stated the same solution, I didn't take the time to read over others comments.

ME and my boys here in brooklyn have a word to describe strange noises coming from our cars...

See Rotaries dont suffer from GREMLINS like boingers do.... but they will get RAMBLERS once inna while.....
Nothing some Duct tape or WD-40 cant fix...

I've got the same problem. On mine, it's the exhaust. The heat sheilds, converters and pipes are falling apart, but barely hanging on . If your in the market for a new exhaust, I would suggest going with Racing Beat as Monza is said not to hold up as well. Good luck!

my rattling( i mean rambling... ) is coming from my exhaust.... pacesetter monza heap o' junk. the exhaust tips rest on a little piece of metal (the rear valence) and i get all kinds of squeaks and crap. i swear, one of these days i'll get a real exhaust! at least i take comfort in the fact that i'm saving a bunch of you guys from getting this crap. "hey, should i get pacesetter stuff?" "heck no! look what at what it did to poor rotorhead. car's loud, rattles, smells funny, and he can't get dates anymore! just say no to monza!"

Replaced the exhaust& cats

I'm replacing my exhaust next week. turns out, one of the three stock cats has some loose debris, as many of you stated in this thread. Thanks for all the opinions and advice.

I'm going to buy a streetport racing beat exhaust setup directly through pineapple racing (they're right down the street, basically.) Yeah, I'm wicked stoked.

Once the exhuast is squared away, I'll work on suspension, then inevitably an engine rebuild.
