What does removing the RATSNEST actually do?

Removing the rat's nest and capping the holes, and also removing the Air Control and Check valve and replacing it with a block off plate, got rid of 90% of my backfires. Especially the annoying pops on decel, but this is not to say that the car doesn't still shoot crazy flames with some spirited driving. Removing the rat's nest air pump and other associated emissions equipment assumes that you are no longer sporting a stock exhaust with cat's.

is the block off plate on the intake manifold? casue my car has a plate there and i was wondering why... al the emisions stuff is gone... well the rats nest anyway and whats the thermal reactor?

Yeah, the ACV goes on the intake manifold. I think the thermal reactor is the stock "exhaust manifold" on the 79-80 cars. Its what acts as the catlytic converters on the earlier cars.
