Mine didn't backfire anymore than before, just a bit on deceleration. And I went way beyond the tutorial. I have nothing left on the carb but the choke. Make sure you do a good job with the block-off plates. If they don't seal well, you have lots of vacuum leaks.

If you have questions as you go through the tutorial, do a search here and at mazspeed.com. There are several threads answering questions about the tutorial.

Is there any gain other than no fear of vacuum leaks from removing the rats nest on a 13b FI?

When I'm sure I've got them right, I'll post more. In the meantime, I still think I have a leak somewhere. I can't hear anything, and spraying carb cleaner doesn't suggest a leak anywhere, but my idle bounces like a baby on a trampoline. I have plates on the ACV opening, the back of the intake manifold where the elbow and hose went down to the cat, the altitude compensator and the shutter valve opening. All homemade, all gasketed, used hylomar on both gasket surfaces. Biggest pain was cutting the ACV plate. Had a hell of a time making it so it didn't interfere with the flanges on the spacer. For the unused nipples on the carb and spacer, I used plugs (no hoses with screws in them ).
