The rats nest is the emissions related solenoids and vacuum lines on the driver side on the engine. Removing it just cleans things up and reduces chances for vacuum leaks. For the GSL-SE, you can't really remove it without affecting driveability. I would just leave it in place.

Really? Would you care to back that statement up with actual factual information? Like the how's and why's and pros and cons, instead of just making a misconcieved blaket statement.

The rat's nest also does more than emissions, depending on options.

Very true. Even on a basic model like my '79 GS, some elements of the rats nest must be retained so that excess moisture can be removed from the oil. Also the air pump cannot be removed on the early cars unless the thermal reactor is replaced by a header or other manifold, since the old style reactor needs a fresh air source to fully burn off the excess fuel in the exhaust. On cars with automatic transmissions or air conditioning, there are other elements of the rats nest that must also be retained.

Bottom line: removing the rats nest does not net any additional horsepower, but for a car that is operated as a race vehicle, or in a region that does not have air pollution laws, it can make working on the car and diagnosing problems much simpler. That's why I did it.
