A rather stupid "add coolant" light question.

I'm looking at buying a 1983 RX7. The seller (a fellow member here) states that the "low coolant" light occasionally comes on, but the coolant is never low when this happens. He's been here a while, and the car's very nice, so I'll take his word for it. That being said, I want to fix whatever is causing these false "OMG I need a rebuild" warning lights.

My question to you all is this: is there anything besides the sensor at the top of the radiator that would cause this? I searched, but did not get a definitive answer.

i wanna say that it is the sensor. i did some wiring removal on my 84, and messed around close to the radiator, and the sensor wire came loose. i was driving home, and the add coolant light came on, so i pulled over and turned the car off, and hoped nothing bad was wrong. i saw a loose wire, pluged it in, and the light went away. i check the fluid pretty regular, and it has never needed to be filled.

No sensor in the overflow bottle. When the add coolant light came on, the buzzer should have gone off too.

You may have 2 problems. A bad wiring connection involving the sensor and the occilator is not working.

I have had this then the wire was half pulled out of the sensor and when the connection was dirty, New (old) sensor on one and wire brush on the other fixed them right up.

Well my overheated junk engine used to do that alot, especially during hard high RPM runs. What the sensor did was detect a pocket of air flowing by the top of the radiator, the dash light would come on.

Start the car up then turn the heater on. If you hear the sound of water bubbling behind the dash, that engine is junk like mine.
