I know the feeling about the A/C. When I started modifying my 83, the A/C was one of the first things to go. Now everytime it rains, in the summer, it's like a f*cking sauna. Think I'm probably gonna get a daily driver with A/C. Hey, you gotta remember, if you wanna play, you gotta pay. In this case, SWEAT!

You'd be best off getting the evaporator and evap case out of a donor car. Trying to buy everything new would be outrageously expensive. I would recommend getting a new universal condensor, the largest one you can fit. If you do, you can use R134a with no problem.

I did. I didn't do it for the weight, I did it because it cleaned the engine bay up a lot. It also needed a recharge every summer.

So I removed it, thats why my car has a sun roof

Well I don't miss it here in sunny Georgia, if you keep your speed up. Like Stu says, AC is cool but it also weighs 100 lbs., needs to be maintained and gets in the way when you want to change your spark plugs or just sit back and admire your 12A. I sure don't miss it, along with the PS, they don't seem to make sense in a sports car, it seems to me.

Oh yeah, the sun roof and functioning air circulation helps.

I am doing it for two reasons; one being that my 13B engine did not come with the compressor and I don't have a bracket for it. The second being that I did not want to try and adapt the 2nd gen system to the first gen system, it seemed like it was more work than I needed.

I haven't double checked on my shell, but if the other A/C components are still in there (i.e Condenser, piping, ect) I won't bother taking them out as I would like to have A/C some day in the future.

I've always laughed at the people who remove their a/c and p/s all in the name of not being appreciably faster. Defrosting the windows is an important function of having it.

The unfortunate thing about the age of these cars is that it's expensive reinstalling a stock system and using R-12. You can use new components and go the R-134 route but then it doesn't blow as cold and let's face it, the stock a/c system can't really keep up with the greenhouse that these cars are anyways. You could swap in used components but I've learned the hard way that it is never reliable and you'll always have to go back and do it again.

I have 9 cans of R-12 laying around in my garage. If someone needs some, I might part company with some of my private stock!

If you search online you will be surprised at the new/rebuilt components available. There is an Ebay store that sells rebuilt compressors for 83-85 for $130. They also have them for earlier models. I've also found new evaporators and condensers. If you still have the sealed system in your car... I've managed to get my 33 year old Cosmo system and 2) 84 GSLs to cool by charging them with the Freeze 12 that this company sells.
