Radio
I have a 1984 RX7 GSL/XE with AM/FM radio and tape player. FM works fine but AM seek finds stations but have no sound. Is this an antenna problem? Original antenna has been replaced with a universal non retracting antenna.

Since no one has replied yet.. I wouldn't think it'd be an antenna issue. The only way I could think the test would be to get close to an AM station. But what do I know? Probably would be worth taking the radio to a repair shop local to you if you have one. I need to take mine. It works but the volume **** likes to fade in and out at times or sometimes just not play sound. I think it's the potentiometer which I could probably clean but I wouldn't mind having some of the other components upgraded to high quality parts if can be done.

Firstly, I would recommend rechecking the specs on your antenna for compatibility with the AM radio frequency. I would also recommend rechecking that your antenna base is properly grounded to car's metal body and that you have a good connection at the radio.

AM still exists. Sports radio, national park advertisements, gospel, and extremist radio is about all I have picked up on a lark. I think there may be one oldies station too.
Anyway, I have a electrical diagram for the SA radio that I need to get scanned. I doubt it'll help in your case but there are diagrams available for the other radios.
Actually, I wonder how the seek function works? Does it just find no static and stop? If so perhaps you are just picking up dead air. Have you tried tuning to a known AM station in your area? Better yet try it on a clear night, AM will be better then. Perhaps what you are picking up in another car is just strong enough to be picked up and I'd bet the technology is newer in the other AM radios and it's picking the weak signal up better. And perhaps it's just too weak for the rx7. This is totally just speculation though.
