Is the VW rack welded to the assembly rather than bolted? I think it looks good but maybe a bit flimsy? Hard to tell without seeing it in person.

I'm also having second thoughts about buying the kit after TJ brought up the point about suspension travel. THere are no pivets to allow for travel it looka like. What does the whole think just flex like a sway bar?

"Stage 1 you will have to supply a VW rack and U-joint only, everything else is included. $350.00 US shipped

Stage 2 comes with everything ready to be installed
$550.00 US shipped"

So $600 and $940 Canadian. Wow, $340 for a used or rebuilt VW rack.

Anway, bring down the cost and:

You will sell more and make more money. Think about it. With any new product you can not excpect to make a profit in the begining, you sell your product at a lower price to increase awarenes and once it starts selling you slowly increase cost as demand increases. Also as demand increases and you sell more, your production costs come down.

Can we assume that if it's shipped in Canada, the shipping cost would be lower? Also, what would the cost be if I were to pick it up at CP Racing myself?

oh jeez, here we go. If you think its too much money don't buy it, or build your own. $550 shipped with everything (I assume that means hardware as well) is a great deal. Shipping for an item this heavy must be at least $75 probably more. The cheapest I found a rack (reman) was $150, and that didn't include rubber boots or any of that, just the bare bones rack. Ok, that makes the mounting tubing etc at most $325. It's clear he's invested a lot of both time and money as have the CP racing guys. Materials aren't that cheap either. I realize at first $550 sounds like a lot of money, but maybe some of us should break it down and think before we go spouting off about how its too much blah blah blah. I'd buy one this minute if my insurance weren't due and my exhaust didn't just fall off.

Right! The guy deserves a little profit don't you think! And anyway this is the only kit available (or becoming available). Low supply=higher cost. Simple economics.

Well, 350 for the hardware is a lot more than the somewhat set expectation of between 200 and 250. As far as the $550 goes..... well, I guess now we have a choice, we can buy this kit or we can buy a brand new Mazda steering box for $551.72 from Mazdatrix. Isn't it a coincidence how these two options "cost" exactly the same?

Yep, that's an interesting coincidence. I'm just fine with my current steering box, especially when I could focus on the real achillies heel of my car, the rear axle. For 550 US, I could get the tri link and panhard from G-Force Engineering.

That's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. Especially when you consider the fact that replacing the steering box will land me in the MOD class for Solo II. It just isn't worth it to replace the steering, IMHO.

I recognize the fact that both time and money have gone into it. If you would just "break it down and think" about my location and the location of CP Racing before you go "spouting off" and "blah blah blah," maybe you would realize that I live a relatively short drive to CP Racing and I would rather that they get my money for their work and save the time, hassle and cost (which the courier gets- not them) of shipping. Plus I would prefer to see them when I pick it up so that I can ask any questions, see the shop, and check out their work for future projects on my car.

Bass Check the Candian forum for contact info for CP Racing

Give Chris a call. He's a good guy, although they're just in the process of moving a bigger facility, so they've been a bit busy the last couple weeks.

Holy FACK! WaaaaaaaaaaYYYYY OFF

I dont know where you got yer info from but the currency xchange is as follows: $350.00 US=$471.00CAN
$550.00US=$741.00CAN
So whatever...hope that helps.

To put this into perspective, a complete (That would be a Stage II for those keeping score...) bolt-on only custom rack and pinion assembly for street use, not drag race use, for a 1968 Pontiac Firebird (That would be my CBird for those in the know... ) costs a mere $999US from a discount source like Jeg's.

Everyone stop whining about the price. His piece looks more involved than the GM conversion piece...

All the Canadians I've ever dealt with on eBay wanted US dollars, anyway, so let's just drop the money conversion BS....

Thankyou to you 4 understanding the concept of what goes into a system such as this. You guys have to remember that I made this system 4u. I remember way back when I said it would be around 225 to 250 but you would have to build your own colum bearing support using parts from your old steer-box and eveyone complained bout that and how lazy they were and how they would prefer to just have me design one and add it to the kit. Woooo that was a RUN ON. Sooooo this is what I did for you and now the self proclaimed lazy ones are to lazy to pay. Oh well nothing I can do, its engineered and all done ready 4sale in 2 different stages. What more could you want? To top it all off not even one company has done this conversion successfully, EVER, nor have they ever sold it for a few hundred dollars. Sorry to rain on ya's but it is VERY bothersome

J Oliver - Question on the use of the V-dub rack.

I don't know performance steering manufacturer's reputations so maybe you could help me out on this one. What's the reason for the VW rack vs. something like a rack from the FC cars? I'm looking into converting my brakes to the FCs and it would be convenient to just buy a whole car to scavenge parts from including steering stuff.

I am very familiar with VW stuff and the rack is very
OVERBUILT, quick ratio, and it was the perfect size.
