racingbeat muffler repack

Our city now has a noise snare which will be effective July 1st.

Basically it is the same as photo radar for noisy exhaust, with a $200 fine for exceeding the limit.

I know my RB streetport muffler was getting a little loud and very raspy so I decided to go for the voluntary test session Saturday.

Results: 106db, legal limit is 96db

After doing some research I discover my muffler is much like a straight through magnaflow with packing inside.

Sorry, no pics of the procedure, never thought about it, but I will take an after pic of the patch weld.

Decision, cut open a long hole and see how much material remains.

Muffler is divided into two compartments, first one houses the straight perforated pipe, second one houses the y pipe which produces the dual tailpipe.

Front compartment was empty of any remaining packing material, rear compartment had about 30% of its fibre packing remaining.

This system is many many years old i must mention.

So we stuffed both compartments with cheap coarse steel wool from home depot. Then welded the patch back in place.

I still get the signature rasp at idle, but driving provided a big "big" improvement.

Now I can't wait to get it tested again and the free test session this wednesday.

I am hoping for 90db......

$20 at home depot was way cheaper than a new muffler!

So there is a partition seperating the front (area with single pipe) and the rear area where it splits??

To try to make my wife happy I did an experiment to try to make mine more quiet and temporarily closed off on of the tips. I does make it a little more quiet and surprisingly did not seem to hurt the power much, if any.

Parks auto parks (a local parts shop) has a bin with a neon sign above it that reads "$15.95 mufflers". All brand new, but not everyone can be so lucky to live in South Carolina with Parks.

But I guess SC doesn't have to worry about noise either.

Have you thought about insertable motorcycle baffles? The HD boys use those removable baffels when they travel through noise traps.

I had a $16 muffler on my SA. It was extremely loud, and then the seam exploded 24 hours after putting it on.

/QUOTE]

All I can say about this depressing development is that it really sucks!!

Has there been a rash of loud cars taking over the city or something??

I think its the Harleys that really contributed to this development.

Do you also run the RB presilencer? It makes a big diff on noise.

RB streetport exhaust with long primaries and 2 RB presilencers.

Next project may be repacking the presilencers if the muffler job holds up.

Came in at 92 normal acceleration and 102 on a pull with some power. So from 106 to 92 for $20, big success!
