Racing Beat FB Pic

I'm looking for a picture of a Racing Beat FB. It was supposed to have set some sort of speed record back in the 80's.

The pic I'm looking for shows a white FB with the Blue and Red Racing Beat logo. The backround is all icy and snowy.

If anyone has this pic, please post it. I had a copy but lost it when I had a hard drive crash a few months ago.

There it is!!! Usually records are met on salt flats, not snow. If it was done on snow, canada would see more records done here.

That's the one Manntis!!!

Thanks

Daedalus
As for the FB getting unstable at high speeds, that's mostly due to the aerodynamics of the stock front end. Adding an airdam to improve the airflow will help keep the front end planted to the road.

If you turn up your screen's sontrast and brightness and look hard at the area just in front of the front rims you'll notice a small spoiler. Oviously what kept the front end planted at high speed.

Maybe a little toe in might help a little too...and the fact that Racing Beat probably went all out in the suspension too...

It was a peripheral port 13B using a Weber 58 DSF carb. It had a cold air box made around the airfilter which was fed from the front of the car via a 6" duct. This supposedly added 3 mph to the cars top speed from not having one at all. There was an eccentric shaft mounted Hall-effect electronic ignition system. The engine redlined at 10000 RPM. There were problems with the rotor bearings getting destroyed at this speed. Remember the engine didn't just hit that number for a second or two. It held it near that high for a good amount of time. The first picture looks like the one that won the GTO class at the 1979 Daytona 24 hour race. If it is then that car had a 250 hp 12A engine. It is more likely Roger Mandeville's GTO class car from 1983. He raced both GTU and GTO in the early '80's. If it is the later car then it had a Lucas fuel injected PP 13B which produced 330 hp during qualifying at Daytona but 310 with a carb during the race. That was in GTU class. Sorry, That was too much info and got off the subject.

smnc : snowy and icy.

Sorry, couldn't resist. All the land speed records are attempted on the salt flats.

Nah... No mods on the salt flats car. SA22's are just that fast. Aren't you FB guys jealous?

LOL

The salt may as well be snow - it's about as slippery as snow.

By the way, Roger Mandeville is still alive and kicking rotarys! He balanced my rotors and shaft for my car. I am in Texas and I flew to his shop to have this done, I pitted for him back in the late 80s on his GTU/GTO car. He and his wife are really nice people to deal with but just remember he is a pure racer, no crazy numbers on hp just the truth.

I have the info in a couple of different books including a pic of the engine bay. Nice, clean and simple. I'll find out which one it is in tonight and tell you. I'm at the office right now so obviously I don't have it here.

Just called Racing Beat about that chin air dam. They say it was a stock Mazda part back in '78 and it may still be available.
