Quiet yet straight through exhaust: POSSIBLE!!!
Yeah, I'm excited, so sue me.
Today a friend and I set out to do the impossible: install a completely straight through exhaust on a rotary that isn't loud as all hell.
My setup:
RB single outlet header
RB mini-presilencer
Magnaflow 2 1/4 in/out resonator
Borla offset 2 1/4 in/out 5x9 muffler
Now previously I tried using a Magnaflow 5x8 muffler alongside the RB mini-presilencer and the Magnaflow resonator. It was horrible: loud and a very blatty note with no smoothness in the tone at all. Then I spotted a lightly used Borla 2 1/4 in/out muffler on eBay and won it for less than $50. It got here yesterday and today it was installed.
What a difference!
The exhaust note has an extremely low tone, very comperable to the full RB setup. The noise level is louder than the RB muffler, no question but still well within reason for city driving and should not lead to any harrassment from the local constabulatory. The real difference is the smoothness of the note, there's no harshness or buzz to it at all, just a nice low tone. I take back all my Magnaflow recommendations, Borla is seriously where it's at!
I'm going to try and get some sound clips up later on tomorrow.

Terrified.
Mine is straight through. Racing Beat Road Race Header, two pipes straight back into a hollow muffler. Its pretty quiet. hahaha
I want to get RB presilencers, and a RB muffler though. Just have to get the money.

I sold it after hearing this Borla.
I'm so impressed with the sound of this setup that I wouldn't even consider replacing it with a RB muffler.
That's how good it sounds.

Borlas are very good on a a rotary, ask the 2nd and 3rd gen guys. They are a bit pricey but make a great pre-silencer by bringing down the total noise, along with adding a sweet, deep tone.
A friend of mine bought the Corksport 3-1/8" single for his TII. Even with that pos muffler insert, it sounded like ***. He installed the XR-1 as a pre-silencer, I have never heard a sweeter TII.

Matt came by to show off his exhaust today, and it sounded awesome. Nice and mellow at idle, opening to a throaty but not obnoxious bellow under high load.
I'm interested to see how it holds up after months of use. Matt's put some work into it, so I hope it serves him well.

on my 85 GSL, i've got a paceshitter header into a straight pipe into a honda resonator into a paceshitter muffler. it was loud until i welded in the resonator. now instead of sounding like a ricer, it sounds like a rotary. im glad my buddy had that resonator laying around!

Hmm, I'll have to search for it, but a thread late last year was subject to debate because someone cut open an RB muffler and showed the world what it looked like
That and RB Stuff REALLY restricts me. I have a rotary engineering header, and if I try to bolt up an RB pipe it won't fit.

I'll get a sound clip today, after work.
I'm hoping that the Borla has similar longevity as the Magnaflow. Both are similarly constructed and both have lifetime warranties, so I think I'm covered.
As for why I didn't go with the RB muffler, lets do a comparison, shall we?
1 RB muffler from the only Canadian distributor: $350 + tax and shipping = $400 +
1 Magnapack resonator: $75
1 Borla muffler: $50 + $35 shipping
One option costs $160 plus some welding time, the other $400.
What would you choose? Add the huge cost savings to the questions about how the RB muffler flows and I don't think there is any choice at all.
I'm also quite tired of the RB system being hailed as the only possible option. There are plenty of ways to skin a cat and I'd hate for us to be simply unpaid shills for Racing Beat instead of considering all the options.

They call it a 'turbo' muffler but it isn't the traditional chambered design, it's all straight through as evidenced by the diagram and the fact I looked right through mine.
