quick gauge question

http://www.shopping.msn.ca/reviews/e...uge-kit-chrome

anybody used these? or heard anything about them. i'm just looking for a simple set of guages and these fit the bill as far as looks(i'm getting them in black). will they do for what they're supposed to be used for? and what do you think the chances are of it having the proper fitting for a 7?

They are on the lower end of the price range. Autometer gauges cost about near much each. Hopefully they come with the correct adapters to connect the senders.

The oil pressure sender should come with a 3/8" NPT fitting. The stock sender can be modified to accept it. The temp gauge is the bigger problem. The block is threaded for a 28 BSPT, iirc, which doesn't come with most kits of any brand. There are other options/places to install the temp sender.

When it comes to your coolant temperature, good luck getting an adapter for whatever sending unit a guage comes with. I've had the same problem and really, there's no real way to do it, short of having a hole drilled, tapped, and died to take that sensor. Some people split their top radiator hose and just get a piece of pipe with a threaded bung welded into it to put between the two pieces.

For your oil sending unit, ReSpeed makes two style adapters to use where your oil filter is to accept one or two adapters (pressure and temp).

When I did my gauge installation, I decided to stick with the factory water temp gauge, and instead installed the temp gauge to monitor OIL temperature... which to my thinking is actually a much better indicator of engine status. Especially since rotaries depend so much on oil for cooling, as well as lubrication.

I used the original-style RB gauge block, which mounts to the oil filter pedestal. Has worked very well, as is tapped for standard senders.

couldn't i just use a T-fitting for my oil pressure and and hook up my aftermarket gauge that way, have them both working at the same time,i know it's kind of pointless but then at least it's there and working, until i want to put out the money for an adapter for everything?

You couldn't do a T-fitting for the coolant temp guage, it won't read properly because of the probe that is part of the sending unit. I've tried the same thing and any adapter you might find for it will conceal the probe. The probe needs to be fully "dunked" in the coolant to give you a proper reading. A T-fitting might not even provide enough coolant to do that. You have only two options for coolant temp aftermarket guage:

1. Drill, tap, and die a new hole into the side of the engine block in a coolant passage.
2. Split the top radiator hose and insert a metal sleeve with threaded bung for the sensor.

The latter will only give you a reading when the thermostat opens up, IIRC.

You could try that, but it's best to go a better route.

Spend a little more now, or spend a lot more later.

yeah i do plan on going that route but right now i'm on major budget building, welding jobs are slow for 1st year college students haha. as soon as i can get welding for a bit as a job then i'll be able to start buying a bit more here and there. but for temporary purposes will the t fitting do for oil pressure.

It should. It might be a tad off because the pressure has to be routed again into a T-fitting but it should do the trick. I'm not entirely sure so I might be wrong but it should work.

I take it that your stock gauges don't work?

Try spraying CRC QD Electronic Contact Cleaner onto your sending unit connection. That just might have it work properly. Hell, mine was coated in gunk (my guage still worked) and when I sprayed it down/clean, it gave a better reading (like higher/accurate PSI reading).

So, try a $5 remedy first.
