Question about swapping S4 tailshaft housing onto S5 T2 Trans
Ok, I know this is a question about FC parts, but it is for my T2 FB and it seems appropriate to ask here, since most of the tailshaft swap threads seem to be in the first gen section (because of T2 swaps etc). Basically what I'm wanting to do is put a S4 T2 tailshaft housing onto my S5 T2 transmission, because the S4 has a mounting flange similar to the Fb and will make the trans mount easier to fabricate.
The problem I'm running into is the S5 has a large "dynamic dampner" on the output shaft, which will not fit inside the S4 tailshaft housing. I've seen numerous theres where this swap has been done, so I know its possible, and in a few guys will mention that the dampner needs to be removed but no one says how they did it. I was able to remove all the snap rings behind the dampner and even get that giant nut off, but it won't budge. Does it need a puller to remove or should it just slide off?
Hopefully someone who has done this will chime in, I think this will also be good information for anyone wanting to do this swap in the future.
Thanks
Sean

that damper is weird to get off. i'm going from memory here, but its actually held in by these two semi circular wedge pieces. i think they are on the rear side, and the nut actually holds those on.
so to get the damper off you tap it with a hammer towards the FRONT, so it moves forward, so you can get the wedge pieces out, then it just slides off.

Ah! That makes sense, now that I think about it I didn't remove the snap ring in front of the counterweight since I figured that just held it from moving around. It would make sense that it keeps the counterweight against those wedges in there and that those things are what keeps it in place.
Surprisingly the giant nut was pretty easy to remove, I just put it in 1st and reverse (I think those are the forks I did) to lock the trans and a pipe wrench took it right off.
I'll see if I can get it all teh way apart tonight and take some pics if I do.
Thaks for the reply!

It worked! j9fd3s was correct, you remove the snap ring in front of the counterweight, push down and those wedge pieces come out then it just slides off.
I didn't take pics of the whole process unfortunatly as my hands were covered in oil, but I did take two to clarify this.
For those who are also doing this, you need to remove 4 snap rings, 2 hold the speedo gear on (don't lose the small plastic key when you take the gear off!) and the other 2 are on either side of the counterweight. Once they are off jam the trans in two gears (I think I put it in 2nd and reverse) and use a large pipe wrench to remove the nut off of the counterweight (sorry I didn't take a pic of this step) but it gives you access to the wedge pieces that hold the weight on there, as seen in the first pic.
I also attached a pic of the snap ring on the front of the counterweight. Again, once this is removed you just push the weight downward (only moves about a 1/4" or so) then the wedge pieces will be loose, remove them and the weight slides off. There is a large metal ball that acts as a key, make sure that doesn't fall down into somewhere it will do damage!
Hope this helps for those who need to do this.

I'm glad that's a T2-only feature. When I went to swap tail housings on an FC NA trans, I was not looking forward to dealing with that thing. Turns out it wasn't even there.

It's some kind of vibration dampner, although I've put several thousand miles on this already without it and its smooth as silk, so honestly I don't know if it does anything...
The S4 tail shaft and shifter assembly should all go right on to an S5 trans, assuming both are T2 obviously.
