Question about GS to GSL-SE rear axel swap

Question about GS to GSL-SE rear axel swap

Hi guys, I'm not a "car" guy really but I just bought a 84 GSL-SE, I heard that these came with a 5 lug but my car is 4 lugs. I know it has a 13b engine and it says GSL-SE on the back.

Ok so basically my drivers side rear axel is bent to the point where the wheel wobbles pretty badly back and forth, it wobbles so bad it screwed up the rotor. So I found a guy who has a entire 84 GS (just GS not a GSL apparently) rear axel assembly drum braxes and all (mine has disc brakes).

So what I'm asking is if I can simply swap the GS rear end into the GSE without any modifications since they are both 4 lug and the same year. or if not can I at least use the axels from the GS on the GSL-SE? I'd rather just drop the whole thing in there and not have to bother with all the extra work or stripping it down. (my dad and brother are the car guys helping me do the labor and stuff so I have fairly competent guys working on it but they don't know the answer to these questions

Any suggestions you uys have would be very helpful, I've been reading these forums and the knowlegde you guys have is amazing.

Welcome to the forum.
Forget the Gs to Se swap. Waste of time and you would have 2 different bolt patterns for wheels after that. Plus the fact you would be down grading the car dramatically.
Post up a WTB ad in the 1st gen classified parts section for a axle replacement.
Put in the replacement parts needed and your done. Much simplier and much better ending.

Youd be better off trying to find a replacement GSL-SE axle shaft.

There were never any 5 lug 1st gens.The GSL-SE has the much more common 114.3MM 4 lug pattern,as opposed to the weird 110MM 4 lug pattern of the other 1st gens.
Swapping in the entire GS rear axle might get you up and running again,but youd be giving up the big SE disc brakes,the SE's limited slip diff and the SE's lower 4.07 gear ratio.You cant just use the axle shafts from the GS either since they will have drum backing plates, in addition to the wrong lug pattern.

ya but I don't have much money I'm poor how much would a replacement SE axel cost you think? anyone know where I can find one? I'll post but I hope it's not an arm and a leg. The guy with the GS is selling me the whole back end for 75 bucks.

Will the only axel that will work come from a GSL-SE? no other model has a axel I could use?

And no there is no substitute for the SE axle,

Compatibility question Concerning GSL-SE's

I was wondering if 84 and 85 GSL-SE parts are compatible in any way. My main question is can I take a 85 GSL-SE rear Axle and put it in my 84 GSL-SE?

The 84 and 85 models are nearly identical. There were only a few very minor differences, and I can't even think of what they are right now. You'll be fine.
