I know if your worried about gas mileage get a honda or something. Well, I just think 150 miles on a full tank with the guage alittle above the E is pretty horrible gas mileage. I've serached. How bad would a clogged cat take away? what should I get in a full tank? My car runs like a champ too.

Actually, get a saturn. They rocketh, and have a Saturn Fans board thats just like this one Really helpful.

As far as fuel mileage though... That sounds just about right. RX7s have a 40 litre tank, right? A gallon of fuel is 4 litres.. So, if by that conversion.. 10 Gallons is all an REX can take for fuel. 150 devided by 10 is 15. That makes it 15 miles to the gallon. Not too bad for a REX, really. The only thing you could try is better plugs for better combustion, changing out the fuel filter making sure its clean and maybe reducing the weight of the car really. I think though, your getting good mileage, unless thats all on highway..

But I think folks around here average 18 mpg.

No, thats stop and go traffic with some freeway driving. New fuel filter, and plugs. Im not getting rid of my 7..just stating that so that everybody doesnt tell me to go get a honda or whatever if im worried about my gas mileage. I still got a quarter maybe left...I usually dont go down to close to the E because thats where all the old stuff is. I just read though of some people getting 300 miles to a tank.

That being said J, That was put out when those engines were BRAND NEW. Also, they were of course having to compete coming out of a gas shortage right? Sorry, I wasnt there Im just going off what I think I may have been told :P

I have put in 14 gallons of gas before in my SE fuel tank. On average I get 240 - 250 per tank. I don't let the gas run all the way down. That is city and highway combined.

Rx-7's have a 14.5 gallon(55L), and youre probably hittin 10-12mpg. Has it always been like this or has it gotten worse over time? If your noticing power loss recently it could be a sign that your cat. is clogged. also, have you done a basic tune up(cap,rotor,plugs,air & fuel filters) or checked timing recently?. My 89 camry went down to 23mpg over a couple of months, and w/ cap & rotor it went up to 32mpg.
higher tire pessures will also help a little

wow, umm, I got new plugs, and fuel filter, as I said the car runs great. but im sure the cat is bad. Im getting the bonez pipe soon so I'll let you guys know. I know about tires and everything. Maybe I'll get new cap and rotor. k&n filter too.

I presume that you still also have the stock carburator correct? Might want to look into rebuild or time to slap on a sterling carb. You might also have sticking needles in there. I'm not sure how much a clogged cat will efffect it, but you have to remember we have more than one anyways. Maybe time to invest in a RB header and center section since you have their muffler. But your car is doing about 10.3mpg ... which is pretty horrible for a basically stock car.

To put thing in prespective, my car which has a faily large SP, and a holley 465 that I know runs rich in the top end where i spend a fair bit of time usually gets me about 12.5-13.8mpg ... When i switch to FI, i think I should be seeing close to 15-17mpg (crossing fingers) if keeping it out of the redline limit.

I would first check to see all vaccume hoses are connected, I had three loose and just by connecting them I saw a 4 mpg increase.

A relatively stock FB running properly should average around 18-19mpg. This always depends on your driving habits.

MPG also depends greatly on your mixture and mods. You will see the best results with:

1. Rebuilt stock carb - a Sterling will yield worse MPG.
2. Fresh Tune-up
3. Free flow exhaust
4. DFIS or MSD
5. NO vacuum leaks

Also on the carb, watch your float levels and operation. Those suckers can stick slightly causing it to run just a little rich. It can be a small piece of debree or a rough spot on the float tab causing the needle valve spring arm to catch. It runs much like a small vacuum leak. This can change your MPG by a few miles.

i currently get about 230 to 260 miles out of a take of premium gas on a stock gs. the only thing done to it is a k&n air filter and no cats and a better stock style muffler. about to do an engine swap next week end I'll let you know what the mileage is when i do that still going to keep everything stock so its all good. might do a trailing and a leading set of spark plugs or an exhaust or something just to see how it does. I'm going to figure this for city driving. when i first got the car and ,it was sitting when i bought her, she only got about 110 miles a tank. and i had the filter put on. it started to get better. then i had all the cats taken out and the muffler changed it get 230 mostly and the carb still runs a little rich. but I'm not complaining.

I routinely get 23-24 mpg (around 350 miles per tank, 392 is my personal best) but that is mostly highway driving. The car is a stock 85 GSL, Nikki carb. If my mileage drops down to 320 or less on a tank I know I have something wrong. It's usually a vacuum leak.

My entirely stock, 126k '85 gets about 360 to a tank...I'm too lazy to figure out the mileage....its in the mid twenties somewhere.
and it has a corroded cat...
I wonder if anything was added that reduced mpg....

Geez, I knew it was horrible. I still have the stock nikki dj55b. I'll go get a cap and rotor and check for vac leaks, but my car runs like a dream and I know what vacuum leaks do to a car. I am a spirited driver, accelerate pretty fast and then stop at the speed limit. On my way home from my buddies place last night I filled the tank up and it filled up with 10 gallons, So I still had 4 gallons left right?? I did, have a huge vaccuum leak I fixed a while ago, the shutter valve. That's fixed though. Im guessing that I'll get a lot more miles from the bonez cat replacement pipe...correct??

That's it, those aftermarket carbs. It's kind of scarry, I'm afraid if I ever try one I'll never be able to go back to 24 mpg again.

TT, the cat replacement pipe will help, so will some more carefull driving, like anticipating stops, don't tromp it from every stop, tail gate some semis and stuff like that. That's what I do to get all the miles I can out of each gallon. But yeh, make real sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, they will eat your gas.

My SE averages 18 MPG on combined highway and city. Not driven for fuel effeciency - sporting around a bit - but I doubt if I could get above 20.

Just bought a 97 Sebring LXi which has a 2.5 L V-6. It gets 26+ on highway...not enough time to get an accurate check yet.
