Question about coil wires

Ok, I have been driving my car (83 GS 12a) for a while, and it is running great. I noticed the coil wires were switched around. So I swapped them, and it still seems to run the same. Is this possible?
I double checked the wiring diagram to insure the leading & trailing coil power wires were the correct colors, and they are. This would mean the car has been running with the coils high tension leads switched around.
I now need to reset the timing, as I am sure it cannot be correct anymore.

Well, I drove the car, and it seems have much better power now that I have switched the coil leads around.
Hard to believe it was even running before. Had autolite plugs and the L/T coil leads reversed, and still got over 20MPG.

Wow, that's pretty wierd. Seems like it would have run pretty rough that way, but I've never tried it myself.... Congrats on the newfound horsies...

Found a few more by setting the timing to where it should be. Was only about 10* off after correcting the crossed coil leads.
Makes me wonder just what kinda idiot was the last person to work on the ignition system. Autolite plugs, crossed coil wires, and timing way off.
No wonder they didn't bother to recover it from the impound yard. Their loss is my gain

Absolutely amazing that it even ran, much less ran that good. Even more amazing is that I was getting 20-22MPG with the ignition system so far out of whack.
Now that I have corrected those issues, it runs like a raped ape. Doesn't make the eyes burn quite as bad anymore. I guess having this all working as designed helps it burn the fuel better.
