I never really found where the source of its air comes from but my guess is warm air--considering it's sitting right above the exhaust manifold it should heat up some...

Well it pumps air from the air brether, into the exhaust, So I guess it all depends on what definition of Hot and Cold you are using. If you concider engin compartment air hot, then its hot air, but I don't think the air is pre-heated through any kind of a heat exchanger, but I don't know for sure.

I may be wrong all together so here is hoping an expert will chime in soon

As far as I can judge (don't have airpumps on my car) it pumps "cold air". Not really cold, but well, intake air, if that describes it better

I don't know either, thats why i'm asking, but from the airpump it goes into the aircleaner canister. so lets say it's hot air. are you with me so far ? what IF that air were to be cooled down before it gets to the air canister ? I've got a small radiator (oil cooler) from a fiero, and i'm thinking of useing it 'in-line' between the pump and the air canister. I've alreaddy made the piping and about to mount the cooler, all is air tight no leaks. what do you think ?? way off ? gimme some feed back.

The air pump gets air from the air cleaner and is ambient in temperature and increases as its compressed by the pump. I dont think that cooling the air before it gets pumped through the hot engine housing and catalysts is a good idea, Mark.... things may crack!

Racer is correct
You want it as warm as possible so the cat will be more efficient.

if you take off the top of the blue air box, and put your thumb over the biggest of the few holes inside the filter, you will (or should) feel suction. thats the air pump hole.

I love those bikes, there was one advertised for sale in the local paper a couple of weeks ago. I think it was an '85. I've been trying to get a friend of mine to sell me his '77 RD 400 for a few years now. He has barely ridden it so it's in practically new condition and is bone stock.
Maybe someday...
