Question About 2ng Gen TII Turbo.

Who makes it ? and what are the specs of it...if any..also, can i just bolt up the 13b manifold to my 12 a ? does it have a built in wastegate ? if it does, can i still use a BOV on it ?

just a few questions for my turbo project before i start it in nov.

Hitachi makes it. The wastegate is internal. Many people have used them on 12A's. How is a BOV affected by whether or not there is a wastegate? Yes, you still want a BOV. The stock turbo manifold will not fit on the engine for 2 reasons. The first is that you need to modify it so that the bolt holes and ports line up. There are pictures of this on the forum somewhere. The other problem is that the center housing of the 12A sticks out and will hit the turbo manifold. You need to do some serious grinding to get rid of it. If you have a T-II turbo manifold lying around and stare at it next to the engine, you'll see what I mean.

i dunno what you are talking about with something sticking out and some grinding needing to be done. mine fits up just nice. no leaks either. woot. all i had to do was the mounting holes modification and the exhaust ports getting lined up.

Hitachi T18,roughly a T-4 but with a smaller compressor for less lag.Its easy to upgrade to a TO4 compressor, but it shouldnt be needed for a 12A application and itll just increase lag.
The 89-91 has a 1.00 A/R exhaust, the 87-88 is a little smaller. The 89-91 is far superior in its manifold design and wastegate volume,so stay away from the older one if you can.The only downside to the 89-91 turbo in a 1st gen chassis is idler arm clearance. It will be very close and idler arm bushings dont take well to heat.A little sheetmetal heatsheild should be made to protect the idler arm.I made one pretty easily before switching to a R&P steering kit.

The GSL-SE 13B has the big boss on the centerplate, the 12A may not,Im not sure. The holes will definately need to be ovaled out,but its still way easier to adapt a TII manifold to a 12A than it is to have a custom manifold made.As stated, the BOV has nothing to do with the wastegate. The BOV is on the compressor side of the turbo and releases intake pressure when the throttle plates are closed. The wastegate regulates the exhaust flow into the turbine to control boost.
Trust me here, and dont take it as a put down.....if you dont know basic turbo terminology, you need to be learning before you do a turbo swap. Its a LOT more than just slapping on a turbo and cranking up the boost. You need oil delivery, cooling, ignition, aftercooling, drivetrain, fuel delivery, exhaust and intake plumbing mods to make a turbo engine reliable and safe.Especially if your turboing a N/A engine.
Making HP with a turbocharger is easy, making it last more than one romp through the gears is the hard part, especially with a rotary's intolerance for detonation.

i know i know

i know i cant just slap on a turbo and thats it....this is why im doing the research now, and buying the turbo next week...im not even going to start on working on this project until i find another car i can drive while im working on my Rx7. Plus im taking the rx7 down to houst, that way when i finally finish the project (hopefully around dec-feb) i will be able to take it out of the garage and drive it..

by no means was i thinking i could just slap the turbo on there and it would work, i know i have alot to research before i can do this TII installation. This is another reason why im asking all the people with a TII Turbo on a 12a n/a to help me out with my questions.

There must be differences between the center housings depending on year model of the engines. The GSL-SE center housing needs to be modified. I'll have to go out and look at my 12A center housing to see if it is there or not. I am of course making the assumption that all housing from the same year have the same basic casting externally. It might just be the old 13B's though. I'll verify it in the morning.
