Question Drifting ??? Definition, please.

What is drifting ? I've only seen the term on this forum.

I know it's not "to wander aimlessly", etc. because you wouldn't have computers and regular internet access

...like "bat turns" and **** ?! That's fun. Used to do that stuff on dirt roads in Granny's '63 Impala.

Where do you do it ? Is this a california phenomenon ? or is it an organized thing ?

its not just cali, but basically you get going real fast, powerslide around a turn by hitting you e-brake, get going sideways a little, straiten it back up and go again. If you can do this you can go around a sharp turn without loosing your speed or momentom. DO NOT TRY THIS ON A STREET ROAD!!!!!! Go to an old parking lot or something and make sure there are no speed bumps or potholes or anything or you might end up upside down.

it started in Japan, grew out of the grassroots stage in the 90's, came to America "officially" August 31 of last year when the first US D1 competition was held at irwindale in CA. DGTA is the east coast association of drifting, and while they have some larer events they are still more small time. Its a phenomenon that sweeping the country, its cool, but the fact that its now being sponsored by some big name companies has ruined it in my opinion, it was more fun when it was still small time.

I don't see how corporate sponsorship affects how much fun I have in my car...

Drifting is just the new hype'd fad, but it's the same as it always was. People have been sliding rwd cars around for a long time...

corporate sponsorship doesn't affect you having fun in your car, but it ruins the image, look at a pro drift event, all the cars look the ******* same, every team has a S15 covered in stickers with a big wing. Sure seeing them drift is still cool, but seeing real cars drift is better. I still have plenty of fun drifting on wet roads and doing a little touge here and there, but I've given up following D1. Just my $.02

I think I'll tick to straights and twisties, but I bet it's a blast like a fast go-cart slick track.

It didn't start in Japan by any means. Tsuchiya himself will tell you it was an adaptation of rally technique to the street, and before rally it was used by Grand Prix cars with balloon tires in the 20s, and Mako Shark Corvettes and Jag E types in the 60s.

Anyone here know how to do a four-wheel drift? Goddamn its so much more fun than just kicking the back end out.

Wait don't give up so easy. Not one person here has explained to you what drifting actually is. First of all pulling the e-brake to get slideways is something you do to correct oversteer once mid-drift ,proffesionals and people who know how to initiate drift using clutch-kick try not to touch the e-brake.(basically
people would start laughing when they see your rear tires stop.)

Drift
To cause a vehicle to exceed its tires' limits of adhesion, exhibiting a lateral slip, resulting in an oversteered condition.

Controlling the limit between oversteer and spinning out is the point.
All of this is done through the length of the turn, which is why most can only do it
in 1,2 or sometimes 3rd(if their good) and pros can do it in 5th around the entire
first turn at Irwindale.

The Drifting Techniques

1.Side
2.Shift Lock(you could use this but if your in a subaru its really good for the trans)
3.Power Over<-----can be used by 4WD
4.Braking<-----this one too
5.Feint<-----and this
6.Lift-Off(or accel-off)<---and this one as well

See, I don't really think drifting should be a 'sport.'

I mean, look at motorsports in general. The basic premise is to get from point 'A' to point 'B' in the fastest time possible. There are no marks for 'style.'

In drift, it's all subjective. It's really like figure skating versus speed skating. Both require skill and dedication, but one is a sport and the other is lame *** fairy dancing on ice, albeit with some cool flips/spins now and again.

David.. search for the 'drift bible'.. Tsuchiya shows you a few techniques. As for drift shows.. I dont think I would ever attend, however, anytime I have a wide corner.. ESPECIALLY if its wet out.. my *** is RIGHT out there smokin the tires off ..

Really... Its been a sport for 32 years now your a little late.
And your gonna have to stop using that figure skating analogy.
Alot of people drift to become better Road race and Auto-X drivers.Once your good
rain does'nt become a problem, you become better at that oversteer situation.
i.e. Rally Cars

Lame *** Fairy???

Heel toe shifting is a race shifting technique that allows drivers to downshift quickly while applying the brakes. Proper heal toe shifting keeps the engine, transmission, and wheel speed matched up so there is no jolt through the driveline while downshifting. When drifting, heel toe downshifting allows drivers to downshift in order to increase engine rpm, while braking to transfer weight forward and off the rear of the car

Video of where drifting is faster than grip. the ultimate-- http://www.vosko.net/media/vrtelektr...4_gymkhana.avi

all the info you'll ever need on technique as well as safe places to practice.

Lame *** fairy huh? Drifting started as a technique to prevent passing during a race while on the touge(twisty mountain roads). You may be faster ,but on the touge where there are no straits not only will you not be able to pass me but your also gonna be scared if it starts to rain. Why? because you don't know how to contol your car in ALL situations albeit
over or understeer ,dry and wet.

Lets just say that this is the SOLE purpose of me and my 7.
Ive been through 2 handbrakes. 3 sets of calipers, and 6 rear wheels from the junkyard. because my stock set of rims have a 2 inch bend on it from my first attempt at a drift at 30 mph. into a benltey car dealership. SCARED the ********* of f my friend, ADAM, he refuses to get in any car with me, even if it has 89 hp. LOL go ADAM. scaredy rich, white boy, i hope u read this,. and from then on ive been drifting in my 84 se almost every weekend for about a year. I HAVE HOURS AND hours of sweet videos to show u guys. Once i find out how to transfer them from my sony handcam, 8mm camcorder to the freakin computer.

HAPPY clutch dumping and heel toeing = your driftaholic, and insanely in love with rotaries, REUBEn

I thought drifting was understeering and oversteering at the same time in a safe, controlled manner. Hows that for a definition? Even if its not the real one lol
