Question 3 of 5 Rat's Nest

I think my previous thread contained too many pictures because I never got an answer for all of the questions about what to plug or leave open. So, I have posted the pictures in individual threads.

This is thread 3 of 5

What should be capped on the Ventilation & Check Valve?

What this piece does is when the engine is off, it allows the air that seeps up outta the block to go to the charcoal canister, when the engine is running it lets the inlet manifold suck the crap outta the motor and outta the canister to be burned. For simplicity, you can remove it. If you can find a way to retain the charcoal canister and this valve along with the hose at the oil filler neck and at the block right below it. Do it, but if not it wont hurt a damn thing, just remember to clean out the oil filler neck once in a while...

MIKE: You need to spend some more time with your '80, your baby needs you! I think you forgot that it vents the gas tank aswell. As for an '80 we don't have a separate charcoal canister, it's in the air cleaner lid. I ended up putting a small filter on the oil filler neck tube and running a line from the intermidiate housing to the air cleaner. Running lines from both didn't seem to help the slime problem much. I left the V & C valve hanging up against the firewall. This one's up to you, I don't think it makes much of a difference either

And leave the hardline on the firewall uncapped? It would be nice to get rid of it.

Leave the hardline on the firewall uncapped. Don't get rid of it.

It has life

I finally got it running this morning. Apparently, all of the rough running after the header install fouled the plugs pretty badly.

I installed my vacuum hoses so that I kept the a/c solenoid valve and the orange solenoid as well.

After deeply studying the manuals (I have both Chiltons and Haynes) and cross-checking with the maze of piping from the removed rat's nest I saw that ony the EGR valve is rendered totally useless by removing the air pump and ACV.

So, for the ventilation and check valve (3 of 5) I routed a hose from the nipple on top of the V&C valve through a tee to the first small nipple at the base of the carb.
The other side of the tee wa shared with a hose from the side nipple of the a/c solenoid.

I will complete this later by using another tee to connect the small nipple under the V&C valve to the idle compensator inlet in the air cleaner housing and to the 5th small nipple at the base of the carb.
