pushbutton starter

Anyone know how to rig up a pushbutton starter? It doesn't seem like there would be much to it. Ive seen the kits to set one up but I don't want to spend $ on a kit that i can find all the components for at radioshack for $5.

Why? Won't you still have to turn the key "on "anyways?

you're right, but I think it would be cool anyways. Has anyone done it or know how to do it?

I'm pretty sure one of the FD guys on the forum did it successfully. He used the button from a Honda S2000. Do a search and I think you'll find the thread.

You don't have to turn the key if you put a switch in for ignition. I am doing this to my motorcycle right now and one master switch hidden so nobody steals my bike and... a tether deal for the track.

If you use a pushbutton you will, because the accessories wont come on. All the push button does is engage the starter....

I am talking about a switch for the ignition, and a switch or start button to start the car. One for the ignition, one to start it. Two switches.

Sounds pretty inconvenient, considering you currently have one easy-to-use switch that turns on both of them at once (located conveniently beside the steering wheel I might add).

Why all the trouble for something that isn't as good or as theft-proof as when you started?

Back to the point---does anyone know of a button starter that will live with daily use that is affordable? I'm not going to wait for someone to wrap their SU2000 and sure won't pay dealership prices to just get the button. Forget why--just the info, please...

Couldn't you just wire a pushbutton into the ignition switch, into the wires for the starter. Then disable the starter function on the ignition switch, then run the switch to a location of one's choosing?

Sounds pretty easy...then again I don't know anything about electronics.

You can make one easily.. You just need schematics. There are none available on the market. Even using the s2000 One would require chopping of wires.

Nah, all you need is a momentary push button that'll handle at least 20 amps of DC current. then you take one leg of the switch to +12 volts at the ignition switch (White/Red wire) and take the other leg of the switch to the Starter wire at the ignition switch (Black/Yellow or Black/Red depending on year and model). It'll test for +12 volts when you turn the key to the start position. Make sure to use at least 12 guage wire for your switch and you're done. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes if you don't get too elaborate with mounting the switch. Hope this helps.

Just get a intermittent 3 way switch from Summit or similar. Get the schematics and wire it in, its fairly easy. Down on the switch is off, middle is power and when you press up on the switch it engages the starter. I can take pics of the one in the race car if it would help. Good luck.

Thank you very much, gentlemen! I knew there had to be somebody with specifics out there willing to share. This is exactly what I was hoping would surface. Thank you again...

Switch mounting is easy.. Right next to the choke in the open slot.

15 minutes? I don't think so. But, I'm meticulous. I never use the crimp dealies or electrical tape. Every electrical connection I make is soldered, then insulated with shrink tube. Loose wires are then zip tied. I wanna do that to the entire electrical system. That mass of wires and tape just gets annoying when you're hunting gremlins.

I shoulda owned a 2nd gen. I really should. I'm too into electronics.

Just to clarify: What you mentioned will work, I just wasn't sure what you meant by the part I quoted. It would always have 12v, which is what they are looking for, of course.

A few Push buttons:

If you want to use a toggle, you can get an aircraft style protector from Summit Racing, like this:

Goodstuff, lemond. With the schematic, you can use any momentary push button switch since a relay is involved. Thanks
