Pulsation Damper..oh noo!!!!
Pulsation Damper..oh noo!!!!
Everytime my car is sitting at a stop light or at a slow speed i smell gas, i thought it was just the cars A/F ratio since my car doesnt have cats, only header and stock muffler. the other day i was checking my motor just to make sure everything was copecetic and i found a fuel leak. this smell has been bothering me for a few months and i just found what the problem was. my pulsation damper is leaking on my GSL-SE. i removed it to inspect it and visually i found that the plastic has a crack in it. it could be the source my my high RPM problems. i checked www.mazdatrix.com for the price on one and it cost like $146. this is the only site i know that has them. if anyone knows another place that has one cheaper then let me know. i need my car running. i use it for school and work and is my only mode of transportation besides taking 4 cab rides per day of around $35
I'd say buy a new one from Mazdatrix, my PD on my SE leaked before. I did the "tighten the screw" trick and it helped like a week. Then one day as I was at a stoplight, an enormous smell of gasoline reached the cabin, I pulled over and it was literally spilling out gas. It's just not worth the risk, esp when it's gas. So buy a brand new one. Make sure you get the 2 crush washers also. Wrench size is like 22mm IIRC.
I've read stories on here of people buying new ones and then they fail in two weeks.
Why worry about it? Just replace the thing with a banjo bolt. For $7 you've got no more worries that your car is going to explode (I did the same thing on my 1986 GXL, the PD was leaking like a river)
Two of my friends cars have gone up in flames because of that faulty fuel peice.
Some people rig up some pretty cool aftermarket setups, but those are even more expensive. Though, they are much less prone to failure.
Good luck

Simplified, It's a device in the fuel system designed to 'smooth' out the pulses of the fuel injectors opening and closing, so that when one injector opens it doesnt rob pressure from the injector that opens directly after it.
