It's been a while since I've posted any info on my car so I figured I'd give a progress report on what I've been up to lately.
I found out early on that my under the headlight oil cooler idea wasn't going to work so now I switched back to a factory -SE oil cooler. Since I use a -SE radiator and my intercooler takes up the room where the oil cooler sits factory I had to get creative. I mounted it in front of the intercooler and now I'm in the process of manking ducting to get air to it and away from it without hot air hitting my intercooler. The cardboard shows how I'm going to bend up a sheet of stainless for ducting.
What do you think? Will it work?

I think you're onto something there setzep. Be sure and put ducting to draw air from the right and left of the oil cooler. to maximize all the airflow through the nose.

seeing that the oil cooler is not as wide as the nose opening, the ducting i mentioned will draw air from a larger area and flow it into a smaller area. creating a venturi effect if you will and therefore SPEED up the airflow. That is a very good thing for cooling!!!!!!!!!!!!! it also maximizes the use of air and prevents air from flowing AROUND the cooler.

be sure the front lip ducting sticks out and down enough to catch air. can you give us a parallel to the ground, straight on shot of the nose?

 

Thanks Gonzz. I also have a few other things I'm doing. I'm TIG welding -6 fittings to the stock 13b-re fuel rails, putting a walbro 255l/h high pressure pump in the tank (external bosch was too loud and didn't flow enough) and finally I'm reworking my exhaust manifold. The pic shows where I cut out the old wastegate tubes from the manifold. The wastegate will be remotely mounted off the turbine housing.

 

Drivefast- I hear what you're saying 100% I just roughed in the ducting with a piece of cardboard I had. The real duct will have better sides and will be wider in the front to catch all that air you talk about

I recommend you keep it simple. Buy a shorty 79-83 radiator, and mount the OC directly under it like stock.

BTW, I took my engine out and apart today

 

i like the setup. directs air to where you want it. it will work if you are able to get enough air to both to provide the correct amount of cooling. also, wha tis tat color?? i am curious.

 

81Rex- I run a TD07 turbo.

Alex- I was thinking of doing that but my oil filter would be in the way. I think I might get a bit better oil cooling this way also. The oil cooler is going to get a direct blast of fresh air vs whatever air can get through the I/C then to the oil cooler.
Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you also. These cars always find a way to keep us busy!

mazdaverx713b- I'm not too worried about the oil cooler taking away from the radiators cooling capacity. Even on 95 deg days it would keep the temp at 180.
The bottom of the car is like a dark plumb and above the trim is a dark candy apple red I think. I bought the car this color so I don't know exactly what the color is called.

 

You should put some side finsas well Ihear itworks great. Seen it done on many 10Sec. cars before.. but I'm sure that one ontop and under wouldwork fine..

If you REALLY want more airflow through the front end and a dedicated air source for the oil cooler that will actually then supply more air to the intercooler and radiator behind it....

You can always do what I did.

Look in signature.

 

Myself- I'll route all the air from the top louver to the oil cooler then the rest of the air will go to the I/C and then the radiator. 10sec cars don't really have to deal with heating up the oil.

Ahh, didn't even notice that under the sticker. I don't think I'll do anything that drastic though. I like my car to look pretty much stock. Good idea for a race car though.
