problem on '85 GSL

Hey, just bought my rx7 a few days ago, It has been having idle problems, horrible fuel efficiency, and a lack of power. I've changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, oil, and cleaned the carb. From here I don't really know what to try next, any suggestions would be great

A thorough check for vacuum leaks would be a good idea. Do a search on vac leaks for many pointers on likely problem hoses.

When I got my 85 GSL last June it had the same problems, sluggish, poor gas mileage, high idle and white plugs. I found three different vacuum leaks, one at a time.

Fixing each one made a big improvement, now the car is very spirited for an essentially stock set up. I did have to do something about those old cats, bonez presilencer bolts right in as a replacement for all three. But this didn't make as big a difference as fixing the vacuum leaks.

Now it idles around 600 rpm (I know, I should turn it up a bit, but after idling at 1500 for 6 months, I'm liking it down low). The gas mileage is the best part, now getting 24+ mostly at 80 mph on the highway.

Look for vacuum leaks, especially that "AV" hose that runs from the back of the carb down near the exhaust manifold.

The stuff about your mom's ashtray oil is urban myth.
