That is a good question...
The '79-80 struts have a longer stroke, I know that, but I'm unaware of a source that has practical measurements. I think that externally, the strut housings are basically identical, the difference in stroke comes from a shorter compartment for the strut cartridge.
Unless you have a '79 or an '80, you don't have to worry. Any and all aftermarket strut cartridge for a 1st gen will fit all '81 to '85 cars.
