Prison Style Power (12a)

Out of the years I have been working on cars, and subsequently "Finding" solutions for "problems" I have yet to see a resource for that kind of engineering prowess for our RX-7s! What I'm getting at is: Has anyone got together a list of junkyard finds for forced induction that will "help out" our lowly 100kw engines? The prospect of dropping four thousand dollars on a supercharger setup... Or a couple thousand for a turn-key Turbo/EFI setup for the 12a... makes me want to cringe when I think about the times that I've used wrecked ford oil-coolers as make-shift intercoolers... or a couple of daisy chained GM 3800 Superchargers on a dodge (running off their own engine...) just to make it work!

My 12a needs love and I only have $1200 to give!... Plus it needs bushings!

Blah!

I dont think tere are any ungodly power adders out on the market for the 12a that you can find at your local junk yard. And from what you said above I'm sure you have some car knowlege from your previous experiences from working on pisssed-on engines before.

I am sure you can turbo your 12a using a TII turbo. Go to the junk yard or in the forsale section and start collecting the parts you need, Turbo, Intercooler, Manifold, Carb Hat etc.etc. etc. I think you should talk to FB II he has a turbo 12a and I am sure you can get it done for $1200 doing the work your self.

But I think to make the power that you want to make out of a 12a you are going to have to spend money and lots of it. But maybe you will be the one to come up with the monster we have been looking for. Just my .02. Good luck with your project

How about some pics of that SC setup?

A lot of the turbo setups in this section are JY setups. But no one has really made a list of the best cars to pull turbos from.

Stock S5 turbo from a TurboII RX7 and the stock Nikki carb setup for boost. http://www.rotaryshack.com/Home.asp this place can modify a stock carb to run boost. Can't get anymore simpler and cheaper than that.

See, this was supposed to be some midnight hour miracle... With a response like: "Yeah, you can just grab a turbo off a Mitsubishi Eclipse or GTO... and use the exhaust pipe backwards for the downpipe... And the manifold can come off a Yugo... As for the carb, toss that out and glue a fuel rail from a Camaro right to the intake! Or use a GM TBI!"

... But thanks for your input guys. There's an abundence of RX7s in Junk Yards here anyway

Its just the crowd of people here ... people don't seem to like to mix and match too many piston with rotary stuff ... i'm with you though i'd like to see some "performance" cars like that. If I had the time to do a car like that i probably would. Really if we're only spending a few hundered bucks off our cars why not?

The superchargers of 1991 and up Ford thunderbird SC could be used with a rotary engine if you do some jerry riging.... I may do that one my self some day. The Turbo II turbo will work easily, but you will have to fab the exhaust manifold. ( i think you can actualy buy one from racing beat or something)

TII turbo is the way to go. It's cheap and it gives you good power. But if you're trying to get 400rwhp out of $1200 just forget it. You could easily make 200+ with simple swaps. 2nd Gen Direct Fire Ignition, loose the beehive, rats nest removal if you don't need to do emissions, etc. Even running a different oil will gain you some hp. Alot of simple stuff like that can give you hp

Haha, as soon as I read about the 3800 sc's running off their own engine I said to myself Im sure with 1200, you could get all the bushings you need, aaaand a gas powered leaf blower. With a few duct taped connections youd have youself another self powered supercharger setup haha.

From what i understand the lobes on the T-Bird S/C as well as the SVT Stang and the Lightning are teflon coated and they dont mix with gas real well......

I'm with you, snwyvern. Seems like there should be a way of "re-purposing" some of the factory performance schtuff out there. If it hasn't been done yet, doesn't that make you want to try it even more?!? You've got me thinkin' bout a trip to the local yards.....

.....when it warms up a bit. Brrrrrrrr!!!

Nice work gmanuser. I have a fuel tank leak I fixed with bublegum, and I replaced some vacume hoses on my carb with fishtank tubing. I also taped the electrical conectors in my car in a way so the head lights would work. This mod saved me riupping out the combanation switch and all that jazz and rebuilding it.

Jerry rigging is teh way to go. Long as you know what you did. The best part is not the moeny you saved but the satasfaction that if somone jacks your car they are not going to go far with it....
