Preferred turbo set ups for 1st Gens (good to see where everybody's at)

I'm still pretty new to turbo's, yet I'm getting used to the differences between the different models.

I recently picked up a T04E for my 82, and the manifold sizes didn't line up properly so I'm having one fab'd to make it fit.

I'm currently running off of my Arkay set up for the time being, and it's being supplied plenty of gas through the 650 Holley.

Soon I'll have the intercooler installed as well to give it adequate cooling, but It will be interesting to see what boost levels I can manage.

read up on the turbos, most of the first gen guys (but not all) are running the stock t2 turbo (t04e?). You could head over to rotaryshack.com just to see some of the set ups they have(the hybrids)

Definetly learn about the turbos, how they work, about boost creep etc. always handy knowledge to have before trying to run like 20 psi of boost

Yea, its not a t04 stock, as was said above many guys use the stock second gen turbos and fab the rest. Others, like me, go for the full t2 swap, slightly less re-engineering required, still a lot of work though...

Stock is a Hitachi HT-18.
Its a relatively large turbo compared to most stock cars. The compressor is roughly T-3 sized and the turbine roughly T-4 sized. The larger hotside is to accommodate the high airflow and strong pulses of the rotary. The smaller cold side allows for quicker spooling.
A common mod is to up the coldside to a T-4 sized compressor.Although its not a true T04 turbo now,its the next best thing while being cheaper and still bolting up and plumbing like stock.Clipping the turbine a little will allow for more airflow, but combined with the larger, heavier compressor it makes for more turbo lag.

I dont mind the lag at all.It actually makes for a nice, civilized ride around town.I can drive at a normal pace,at the same speed as anyone and never ever boost up.This is nice for when I want to save gas or not attract attention to myself. When things get serious, its just a push of the gas and a short second or two(or just downshift) and Ive got 14psi to work with.

Old pic of the hybrid TO4/S5 turbo, before I installed the engine......

Steve's got the right idea, in that, the T04E has different sizing. It's a JDM T3/T4, and I'll be mounting an intercooler once it comes in the mail.

My last Rajay blower couldn't stand the exhaust apparently, so I'll get as much as I can out of this one.

Finally got the posts up of my set up. I'm still in the process of switching out the old turbo for the new one, so I'll update it when I can.
