Power Steering Problem - 85 RX&

I need some help. My 85 RX7's power steering pump seems to be overheating. IT starts running fine, then when it heats up, it begins to whine....then approx 10-15 minutes later, it appears to boil and force it's way out the filler tube. The power steering work fine................but when it is hot it does whine badly. Can you give me some trouble shooting advice???? I thought is was a bad pump, but now I am thinking maybe the line is clogged not allowing fluid to flow? But if that is the case, would the steering turn? (which it does)

Correct type of fluid and at the proper level? I don't really know enough about power steering to be of much help here, but someone should be along shortly who is better qualified to assist you in this. Welcome to the forum.

usually when your steering pump whines when you turn the wheel is with low fluid level. air is introduced into the system because of the low level. Also i read a post a while ago with someone having kind of the same problem, they came to the conclusion that the seals on the shaft were worn and causing air to be sucked through. The same result of the air being introduced into the system.

I'll say this, any time you add fluid to a system when it's low you crank the wheel back and forth to burp out any remaining air. If you are getting a consistent froth i would lean towards the seals sucking air through, which means loop the lines or buy a new pump. Maybe rebuild?

good luck ppl. Mine only whines cuz the bearings are going bad. The pressure line leaks too so when it gets too low it makes a lot of noise. I refill it and after the air is bled it goes back down. I have the hose but dont have the time to fix it yet. Might as well replace the pump though....let me just pull out $200 out of my pocket first.
