Power steering... or lack thereof

I just bought an 1985 GSL-SE. It is bone stock. Which means no power steering. Would the FB veterans recommend that I put one in or keep it without. I'm starting to get used to having to use my muscles but I'm not sure how much, or even, if not having power steering slows reaction times.

My plans for this car are autocross, Pacific Grand Prix and other time attacks, and spirited back road driving.

What are you suggestions?

Personally the only times Ive found that I could use PS is in parking lots and even then so long as Ive got some speed (3-5mph) the lack of PS isnt noticable.

power steering was a $300 option in 84 and 85. its nice for low speed stuff but imo, road feel is lacking over the manual box. i prefer the manual steering to the power steering.

Is there an option available for an '82? Of course at high speeds the 'rack and pinion' sterring is just beautiful.

I disabled and bypassed my power steering unit when I got my GSL and it required repair. Never missed it as compared to other non-power 7s I've owned. Car has been used for the same things you are looking to use yours for. For a real improvement, invest in the Re-Speed quick ratio R&P conversion, instead.

My GSL was PS free and after a little while it becomes effortless at anything but a dead stop. I now have the RE-Speed R&P kit and it's even better.

I have an '84 formerly with power steering. I first disabled it but I was not happy with the slop and I went with the Re-Speed kit and I could not be happier. The best $1k I spent so far.

Every PS equipped rx7 I have ever driven had "wonder-steer," as in " I wonder where its going to steer next."

The manual rack is a nice improvement to a PS car, the Re-speed setup is an incredible improvement.

So I'm hearing from everybody that I should go ReSpeed R&P. Now I just need the money... It's always about the money.

Thanks everybody for the input.

no power steering option until 1984. and the power steering was only available on the GSL and GSL-SE
