power loss

I have an 85 SE with 70K on it,From a stop if I get on it , when it is warm, I will get to 40K in third and it feels like I am running out of gas , the engine misses and slows down and bucks and snorts something terrible. if I behave myself and ease on up without mashing I can go through the stalling point and on up to 80 mph. do this with a cold engine and the stall starts in about a half mile and messes about until the temp comes up . Anyone have any really good ideas. Has anyone seen the ad on the telly where the car dissapears in a cloud of smoke ,then reappears from the past . Thats what I want!!! from a light jump strait up and dissappear.

possibly problems with fuel pump, fuel filter, or injectors, but I'd bet it's something simple like your spark plugs are hosed. Doesn't cost anything to take a look at them and see if they're carboned up badly.

Some more information might help though; like did it come on slowly, or all the sudden? Anything done to the car?

*awaits LongDuck to chime in* inspect the basics first. i.e. fuel filter, plugs etc...... as a suggestion, you may have an air leak in your intake manifold. when the engine is cold the intake won't seal. when it heats up, the aluminum expands, and minimizes the air leak. a bucking could be caused by a tps being out of adjustment. the tps gets worn and the ecu recieves the wrong signal. thus the tps needs replaced.

i am getting the exact same problem. i just recently took the stock airbox out and put a new afm and k&n filter assembley on it. i put it on monday and its been fine until last night. it has gotten colder at night the last few, but as he stated, runs good, but if you get on it, it stumbles at high rpm. i bought the car and got the thing running up to par: new plugs, had racing beat wires on it, changed all fluids, sent injectors to rc engineering, changed the fuel filter and dropped/cleaned the tank. i think it may have something to do with the afm swap. i used the one that the filter assembley was on and not the one that was actually on the car. i will swap the original one back in and see if it fixes the problem.

sounds similar to the problem we were having. Exhaust is a little plugged up on the old' girl and when we put in a higher flow filter system it would bog when you got on it (gargle, kinda). Too much back pressure I guess. We're sticking with the stock air filter till the new exhaust gets in the machine (already ordered).

First, thanks guys for the glossery of abbreviations. my car is carburated, tank has been cleaned ,new filters, new fuel pump. then I checked the pump and found just under 3#, re placed it with the old one at 3+ # psi. that helped a lot ,now it is the high rpm in third hi and 5th . am going to pick up a new pump at 4+ psi. new plugs and reef down on all the manifold bolts to torque.

high rpm falter

This came on all at once, had a leak on the top f the tank so dropped it and fixed it ,new sender while it was out and a new sock in the tank.new fuel pump and filter. see previous thread. then there was aproblem with the pump not getting power, fixed that by hooking direct to the coil lead so it comes on with the key.
